Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"On Monday, we worked some more on spelling. This time, instead of him spelling the words for me, I spelled and had him read. He did well, and he nailed "quarter," which is one he struggled with before."
"The student read three chapters out loud from "The Bad Beginning" and wrote an essay about which character she is most like. I am working with her on outlining and introducing topics thoroughly in her essays."
"At this session, the student continued discussing the non-fiction book she is reading, "The Bermuda Triangle." She was excited to say that she had found a passage in the book she had mentioned last session but was not able to find, describing what happened to a particular ship. She then shared with me the person whose point of view she agreed with the most, or who she thought was right. We worked on comparing this person's point of view with another person, and discussing where his evidence comes from. We discussed who he agrees and disagrees with, and why she believes that his arguments are good ones. Finally, we connected this discussion with what she has learned about Greek mythology, comparing popular stories about the Bermuda Triangle to ancient myths, as both are stories that help people understand the reasons behind powerful and difficult-to-understand events. For next session, she will finish the book."
"Student one read the book aloud. He summarized what happened at the end of book 1 then what he has read so far I book 2. We did some flashcards on the learning tools for practice test questions. I am working with him on slowing down and reading all of the answers before answering. Student two read aloud also. We discussed what we were reading to ensure she was comprehending the text. We also worked on homophones and picking the right word to finish the sentence."
"This week, the student and I worked on her sight words and read two books at her level. The student showed improvement in words with the long "I" sound that is followed by a consonant and an e, like "like." The student and I started reading a book and discussed what a metaphor is!"
"The student and I discussed the rest of his analysis section for the IB Internal Assessment. We went over what he had written thus far and I offered my revisions. We then talked about where the paper needed to go next to be more cohesive. He worked on writing for short amounts of time (10-15 minutes) and then going over what he had written with me. We decided to have an extended session as it will be the last before his final paper is due. He continued to utilize previously discussed techniques such as the thesaurus, a previously drafted outline, and already identified quotes. He gains confidence as a writer as always, and really takes into account my edits and advice. We plan on continuing to work together on subsequent assignments, and I am confident he will continue to improve. He will be emailing me a final draft of his paper by Tuesday evening so that I can review it and provide my final thoughts before Thursday."
