The student and I had a productive session today. We reviewed some new material that was covered in his math class, such as frequency tables, mean, median, and mode. He was pretty comfortable with this material. We also reviewed mixed numbers and improper fractions, specifically how the two relate to one another, how to change from one to the other and how to multiply the two types of fractions. I also had him use pie diagrams to visually recognize what the fractions were, how to simplify them, and how they related to one another. We ended the session with practicing PEMDAS, which he had indicated he wanted a little help with. We successfully went through some problems together, and I gave him a few reminders to check his work, and I left him with 3 PEMDAS problems to solve before our next session.

Tutoring review by Kathy in Maryville, MO
We read a fiction book narrated in the past, discussed summary, comprehension and vocabulary. We then continued with reading grade level 3. I reviewed the student's narrative writing samples to further practice past tense and appropriate phrasing in English. He continues to struggle with "th" and some of the short vowel sounds. We worked on practicing tongue twisters to concentrate better on pronunciation.

Today we have covered topics from the practice exam, regarding composite functions, graphing parabolas in vertex form, expanded form, and factored out form. We also graphed absolute values of parabolas. We looked for x intercepts, y intercepts, vertical asymptotes, horizontal asymptotes, and domains and ranges of functions. We also determined inverse functions of given rational or radical functions using x-y exchange.

Tutoring review by Kristy in Maryville, MO
Today, we went over simple linear regression. I explained to the student the basics of correlation analysis in order for him to understand the assumptions that need to be met before running a regression analysis. We talked a little bit about what r is and how to predict the r value from a scatter plot (directionality and strength). We then discussed regression conceptually. Then, I followed the lecture with a video, where they calculated the regression of a small data set by hand, and I had him ask me questions during the video and paused at places to explain certain things. Then, we ended with answering a few sample questions from one of my textbooks and with me teaching him another way to calculate regression if given (means SD's and an r value). Overall, it was a very productive first session.

We went over questions from a test, with a calculation of the area of a trapezoid resulting from a folded piece of paper. We worked on some of the basics of similar triangles and proportions, areas, dividing polygons into triangles and rectangles, Pythagorean theorem, properties of bisectors and diagonals.
