Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
Student's Diagnostic Scores are as follows: Math - 510 Verbal - 540 Writing - 630 I was very impressed with how quickly he absorbed what I taught him during our writing review session. His essay was phenomenal! I have asked the student to complete the second practice test before our next session on Sunday; we will be focusing on his math and verbal comprehension.
The student and I discussed her SAT, and she thought it went pretty well. We then worked on ACT math for the first hour, and she did great compared to where we started with her math skills. Then we worked on ACT science for the second hour, and she did very well on that section as well. She takes the ACT Saturday so this was our last session.
Today I timed the student on two practice sections. He did well on both sections. We discussed his applications. I assigned him homework of working on an essay for his application. This way he gets practice writing for the essay portion of the exam and so we can review it together next time.
In this evening's session, the student and I worked through his Final Review Packet. Topics included determining whether or not data show correlation, writing equations, and triangle similarities. Once we finished the review, I came up with some extra problems for the student to work on dealing with solving systems of equations by substitution. The student seemed confident with the material, and he should do well on his final tomorrow.
We went over an extra credit assignment for the student's geometry class. The assignment involved determining the number and types of angles in a complicated geometric figure. Since the student finished the question in about a half an hour, we ended early.
We went over finding the slope of the line tangent to a given curve equation. He recently received a 9/10 on his last quiz. He was struggling with taken questions I step at a time. We reviewed his homework together so he doesn't have any extra practice until he gets his new homework assignment tomorrow. No concerns.
The student and I worked on more math problems from the website. She has been doing much better on the word problems and has been getting many of the ones she used to miss about averages, circles, etc., correct. However, she has been missing geometry problems. We talked about filling in all angles and sides you know using rules for parallel lines and similar triangles and then use this information to answer the targeted question.
Today we took a verbal practice test together. His test is on Friday, will meet again tomorrow. We met again on Tuesday and focused on reading comp. We also did a math review.
Today, we spoke in depth about factoring polynomials of order 3, 4, 5. We practiced synthetic division. The student has a strong, solid understanding of the meaning of a root and a factor. Tomorrow, we will do practice problems in preparation for her test on Thursday.
Today we worked on basic integration, then we started to cover the u-substitution technique of integration (though not in much depth). The student had some initial difficulty getting used to the process of integration, but this is being resolved with continued practice and application.
Today, we began chapter 4 congruent triangles with the idea of finishing half of the chapter. The student picked up on all concepts very quickly so we were able to accomplish much more than expected. He did an extraordinary job with writing congruent triangle proofs. He did not struggle at all today.
The students both covered arithmetic with fractions and I assigned 50 homework problems to both. Both students are highly intelligent and will improve even more if they master their basic number facts (addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division).
