Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During this session we continued to work through a problem set packet for the student's final exam. We covered problems on finding lateral area, surface area, and volume of 3D shapes. We also worked through problems on similar triangles. He did very well with the problems on similar triangles. He was also able to easily use formulas to calculate the areas and volumes of shapes, but had some difficulty conceptualizing how the formulas were derived. We worked out some of the problems conceptually without looking up the specific formulas for the shapes, and he improved with his understanding of the processes."
"The students are working on proofs in school. Today we worked on proving that given quadrilaterals were either rectangles or rhombuses. Both girls work well on their own, but they work at different paces. The girls might benefit from more individualized attention, so I will reformat our sessions."
"The student and I reviewed her last test, which she did excellent on, and the next test she will be taking is on Thursday. I thought the student did a fantastic job answering the homework problems and review packet. She understood the formulas and theorems and how to apply them in the problems. I like how she writes on the diagram and marks the measurements given, so that she doesn't have to go back to the question and read what the measurements are. I would have her just review the problems we did in the session and then look over the formulas and theorems for circles before the test on Thursday."
"We went through some early assignments that the student was allowed to redo for his online geometry course. We did numerous problems involving line segments and angle bisectors. Also, there was lots of algebra involved. He just needs to take his time and write out all his steps, but he is doing better each week we work together. We broke each problem down & drew all necessary diagrams to help with visual learning. He was very attentive and engaged throughout the session and his grade is steadily going up!"
"The session was extremely productive. The pupil and I focused on building his mathematic skills in algebra to prepare him for his upcoming test. His inquisitive nature and work ethic continue to impress."
"The student and I reviewed for his upcoming quiz on his new chapter, which involves similarity. The main focus of the chapter is on similar triangles and its applications, but the early sections briefly touch on similarity in polygons with more than three sides. This chapter has many sections, but the material progresses very slowly. He has struggled very little thus far, so we ran through each section, and I quizzed him on criteria for similarity and reviewed some problems that he had originally answered incorrectly. The one area he actually did need a little guidance was the quadratic formula. The quadratic formula was in his note packet, but he states that his teacher did not spend any time discussing it in class. I decided it would be better to teach him the formula just in case his teacher does test or quiz on the material, and I randomly asked him to dictate the formula 4-5 times throughout our session. He caught on quickly, and I stressed that he review the formula a couple more times before his quiz. He had a very good grasp on each section, and his mistakes seemed to be in mathematical computation and/or failing to completely simplify his answers (simplifying radicals, completely factoring polynomials, etc.). He understands his errors and admits that sometimes on his homework he just likes to do his homework quickly to get it over with. We also reviewed the second half of his homework due on Thursday, and he did not have any issues."
