Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"During my final session with the students, we did a general review of all college entrance exam sections. To start, we reviewed the answers to a math section I had provided for them to complete after our last session. For the most part, they answered the questions correctly. We discussed using the slope formula to find the y-intercept of a line as well as lengths of the sides of the triangles drawn below the lines. I prescribed to both that they just refresh themselves on some math concepts to become more familiar and comfortable with the type of questions asked on the exam. We subsequently reviewed a critical reading section, on which both students did extremely well. This had been consistent over our past recent sessions as well. I administered a new multiple-choice writing section for them today as this seemed to be an area in which both could use improvement. I was pleasantly surprised by how much both had improved since the beginning of our time together. Student #1 in particular, did very well on the section, and his explanations were right on point. Student #2 has similarly improved but definitely needs to keep practicing in order to avoid becoming rusty on grammar fundamentals. During our remaining time, we worked on building on outlining skills for structuring timed essays, and I answered questions about general college admissions topics. In evaluating my six sessions with the students, I would say that I am pleased with their evidenced improvement in their verbal skills and expect that they will perform similarly well on their respective test dates as long as they continue to practice diligently."
"We mainly covered problems that the student had questions about in the college entrance exam math section. He does not have a problem with the mechanics of each problem. I told him to keep doing the practice problems for the English section."
"Today we began by reviewing the student's mathematics homework in order to follow-through to ensure learning of reviewed concepts (decimals, fractions, percentages and inter-conversion). She then completed practice math problems and was assigned the remainder for homework. Then, timed ability section problem sets were administered and she performed well. During the second hour, vocabulary homework was reviewed and she updated her vocabulary list. Punctuation and capitalization homework was also reviewed and key strategies and points recorded for reference. Verbal practice question sets were completed under timed conditions and need for improvement and additional practice was identified. Verbal and math homework for practice and solidification of learned strategies and techniques. A reading comprehension assignment from a separate book was also assigned to reinforce previous reading comprehension review."
