Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today, the student and I went over transformations and covered the basic rigid motions like reflection, translation and rotation. I thought the student struggled the most with rotations and had trouble rotating it 90 degree and 270 degrees about the origin. I showed how you can rotate the shape by turning the paper around 2 turns for 90 degrees and 3 turns for 270 degrees. The student was able to grasp that and she was able to the rest of the rotation problems with ease. We spent about 20-25 minutes going over her homework and then used the rest of the time to practice."
"For the first half of the session, we worked on math homework that the student had to revisit. It was on telling time. Before we began, I quizzed her briefly to see what she knew and what she didn't. then I gave her a brief lesson on how to tell time and short cuts (knowing that the 12, 3, 6, and 9 increase by 15). She made all of the corrections, some with prompting. I encouraged her to look at the future pages of the telling time packet to get ahead. She resisted at first, but then conceded. I think she will be more confident in class if she understands the material. It is probably a good idea to find out what the teacher will be working on next so that the student can get that edge."
"The concepts that we covered specifically was mostly math questions from the packets given by his school. The student struggled mostly on mixed fractions and word problems. The student's attitude was very cordial and friendly. I included some study skills advice during this session. I really liked today's session as both of us finished more problems than we normally do and the student seemed very interested in completing problems with varying complexity."
"The student and I continued our work on what she was given to complete over the summer to keep her skills fresh. Specifically, we continued our work on fractions: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. We also continued working on some geometry concepts introduced last year and to be expanded on this coming year. She again did well on the fraction section and the intro geometry stuff. Some of the geometry concepts were new to her or she didn't recall them so she struggled a little at first, but picked them back up easily."
"We focused primarily on + - x / fractions. Adding and subtracting fractions with common denominators was great and requires no more review. Need more work on renaming fractions with common denominators, especially finding the lowest common denominator. We will also spend more time on multiplying then reducing fractions. We spent a few minutes reviewing multiplication facts. This still needs review and I encouraged her to continue practicing her facts at home. We spent that last few minutes having her try general sixth grade problems. I will review these with her next time."
"Today we covered algebra 2 with factoring, and multiplying/ dividing exponents. We also covered essay writing. We also covered physiology. The student did well with solving problems with exponents. The student needs to get stronger with his multiplication and division."
