Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We focused on the quantitative section of the exam. She took a practice section and I went over the best way to handle each of the questions."
"During the first hour of today's session, we reviewed the student's Reading Comprehension homework. She was struggling with questions of main idea synthesis, deduction, and application. We reviewed techniques including a main-idea reading approach rather than a detail-oriented one when reading passages. Furthermore, she was encouraged to formulate a main idea before viewing multiple choice options to more accurately select answer choices. Thirdly, emphasis on the author's style, tone, and mood to further deduce the main idea, purpose, and goal of the author was emphasized. Upon applying these techniques to additional passages, her scores dramatically improved that very session (from 65-75% to a 93% average). During the second hour, we reviewed her math homework and clarified confusions regarding inter-converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions. Furthermore, she was unsure about decimal placement and the concept was clarified and reinforced via practice problems and teach-back methodology. Subsequently, we focused on Language section review and reviewed previous vocabulary via pop-quizzing, vocabulary question sets, and discussing of the role of context clues in answering such questions. We then reviewed punctuation and capitalization, another Language section topic, and discussed techniques in approaching such questions. Mathematics, Vocabulary, and Punctuation/Capitalization homework was assigned both in her workbook as well as through copies made from other books I've obtained. A wonderful student to work with!"
"During the student's last tutoring lesson, we reviewed questions #1 through 39 of the student's math practice exam. After this math review, he completed the remainder of the math practice exam, answering questions 40 through 53. After he completed the math practice test, we reviewed questions 59 through 72 on the English practice exam. We worked through these English questions together, discussing the correct answer for each question. With the remaining time in today's lesson, I had him complete questions 46 through 58 on the English practice test (only answering the questions he got wrong on the last English practice test). For homework, he finished the additional math sample questions and only missed 8 questions out of the 42 math questions (scoring 81%). His test scores on this specific practice test have consistently improved. He has made good progress in preparing for the English and math assessment exams. He is motivated to pass these two state tests and receive his high school diploma. He will be using his two study guide books to review from until the two testing days arrive. It has been a pleasure tutoring him. He is always focused and on task. Thus our lessons are always quite productive."
