Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This 1.5 hour session focused on giving the student help in developing his understanding of his assigned novel, The Snow Flower and the Fan. The student and the tutor reviewed the upcoming elements of this book, and the student began to answer the questions from his class green sheet. The student and the tutor reviewed the background elements of Chinese 19th century history to place a context on the novel. The student was presented with questions and the tutor clarified areas of uncertainty. The tutor requested that the student read and review the first three chapters of thee new book prior to the next session."
"Since the student did not take the test after all, we have decided to use her remaining sessions to go over homework help. Today she was finishing her last assignments for her English and Sociology classes. She is not scoring as well as she would like in English; fortunately her teachers allow her to redo assignments to boost her grades. We focused today on finishing one of these assignment, a five paragraph research essay on aging. Her online school provided the texts she would need for research; we reviewed these and took detailed notes. I noticed she does very well with making connections between the text and her daily life. However, she has difficulty with retaining the information from the text. To help with this, we followed the school's prewriting and drafting organizers to keep track of the information. We were able to finish the final draft of the essay within the session."
"At today's session, I worked with both students. Student E and I read through a nonfiction book on King George III and his reign over Britain. Periodically, I would ask him questions about what he was reading, to make sure he retained the information in the chapter. He had a pretty good grasp of what was going on in the book. I asked him what assignments he had currently in his English class, and he told me that he had to write a short novel (a few pages in length) about a certain topic of his choosing. He chose to write about basketball, and ended up finishing that assignment on his own, a few days ago. I worked with Student G on some biology work, because he has a test in that class this week. I helped him to complete a review packet he had, for his test. It included questions on DNA nucleotides, mitosis, concentration chemistry (hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions), and the different organelles in the cell and their functions. He had a decent grasp over this material, but I felt that he could study a little bit more, and I told him about this. His exam is in 3 days, so he still has some time to review. I emailed him some resources to help him in his studying. Both students told me that they received a "B" in their English classes, for 2nd quarter. They said they are both happy with their grade."
