Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began our session discussing progress reports that the student's mother had received. She was earning three A's and one B. Again, this is significant improvement from the first semester when she earned a D and an F in two of her classes. We reviewed upcoming homework and constructed a schedule for completing it this evening. We evaluated her academic achievements since she began tutoring sessions. We concluded that there are several achievements: very strong learning/grades in Chemistry, the majority of her school work completed since January at the start of the 2nd semester, being more organized and in control of her school/family/social life, a commitment to herself for more consistent follow-through, and developing patterns that support her success in school and at home. Areas for improvement include consistent review/studying for quizzes, consistent use of her 3-ring binder as a organizational tool, getting increased sleep, and learning not to underestimate the amount of time realistically needed for homework completion. Finally, we reviewed the previous goal and action steps for her chores at home. We then worked on writing a second goal (completion of all homework, assignments, and study-time reading/writing) and its action steps for academics. She created action steps for this second goal that are much more specific and sequential in nature, increasing her likelihood to reach her goals."
"Today, the student and I discussed his upcoming assignments for Psychology, History, English, and Chem. We worked on his History assignment due Monday, which is writing a letter from the perspective of a WWI soldier. He researched what a British soldier experienced during the war, took notes, and then planned out his one page assignment. After History we went over his understanding of reflexive verbs and determined that he needs to create a set of flashcards for vocabulary and reflexive verbs. We then discussed a timeline for his English, History, and Chemistry assignments. The student is very interested in not only improving his Spanish skills, but also getting more organized and not waiting till the last minute to do his work. He's very eager to learn and improve. I am very excited to see how he progresses through the semester."
"The student has to do an annotated bibliography of his sources. We reviewed ways to do the bibliography in the format required. Also, we reviewed vocabulary for his Friday vocabulary quiz; he did a great job. The student has a project due on volcanoes for his science class. I assisted in his organization of his research. I assisted as the student got online to find information that answered several of his questions on his topic."
"This session focused on reading fluency and math, specifically place value. A grade 4 fluency probe was administered with results to be used for subsequent session planning. Place value with a focus on standard, expanded, and written forms, was covered via guided and scaffolded practice."
"Today the student made corrections to the mistakes that he made on his homework. We reviewed "there, they're, their" and the singular and plural form of possessive nouns. For homework, he is to rewrite the end of the princesses story (page 52), read a chapter in his book, and complete pages 86-87 and 223 in his book."
"We studied phonics, dictionary skills, and math as usual. The student did really well today! The phonics lesson was a review on digraphs and silent consonants. Her reading and pronunciation are steadily improving, as is her vocabulary. In math, she had a big breakthrough and figured out why multiplication is the opposite of division, and is now able to do some simple division in her head. She also learned about the commutative property. Great job!"
