"In addition to two language immersion programs, I did a two-year stint as a teaching assistant for first-year Chinese (which was one of my all-time favorite classes, both to take and to teach). Eventually I went to China to teach English for a year, but decided to come home because of a lack of long-term job prospects. Despite that, I still love my languages and try to stay current by reading foreign news and doing translations. In my experience, the best way to learn a language is total immersion--with little to no English as a crutch. For this, a good tutor (or a language exchange partner) is essential.
