Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did reading and spelling today. The student and I began reading one of her summer reading books, The Kissing Hand. She read each page until she made no reading error for that page. We read about 5 pages total. Then we worked on the correct spelling and pronunciation of the 5 words she had difficulty with in first 5 pages of the book - wonderful, strange, scary, gentle, & secret. By end of session, she recognized these words, pronounced them correctly, and could sound them out and spell them/write them out. "
"We spent more time working through the arithmetic reasoning section of the ASVAB. We also spent part of the time working on the reading comprehension sections. He still struggles with math (there are a lot of gaps in his education, but I am working to fill them) and his vocabulary needs work, but we are working on test taking strategies to improve his performance. We briefly touched on passage reading, and, though time appears to be his biggest issue, he is performing well."
"We covered how to find the zeros for quadratic equations using the quadratic formula, factoring, and finding the locations on the graph where a function is undefined by making the denominator equal to zero. We discussed how to set up word problems, and I used a computer program in order to graph equations to help him visualize the solutions to what we were working on. He is a really attentive student and has a great personality and attitude. I hope we will be working together more."
"We reviewed for a two-day long science test, taking place on Monday and Tuesday. The animal phylums covered were porifera, cnidarias, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, and nematoda. We worked review problems from the book, played a Jeopardy style game with matching characteristics to each phylum, and I also quizzed her over the phyla. By the end of our session, she was quite comfortable with the facts and actually said she was excited to take the test. I think she will do very well."
"We worked on a section of a practice SAT just to diagnose his abilities. He definitely showed some skills, but struggled with arithmetic concepts such as managing fractions and absolute value. We'll continue diagnosis on Thursday and set up some work for him to build his abilities with fractions."
"We covered solving for arc length of a curve, solving various probability problems give a probability distribution function, and many different types of sequence problems. It was a great session. Some of the problems he solved quicker than I did! In general, I was coaching him to try to slow down and be more thorough, and that way you minimize those minor mistakes."
