Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I began our session by reviewing her homework. We discussed the concepts of finding the area between two curves and integration by parts, and then moved on to finding the volume using cross sections, washers, and discs. We will discuss more of these concepts when we meet tomorrow."
"We reviewed the concepts from last time including the definition of the derivative, the quotient rule and the product rule. We then learned the derivative of sine and cosine and used those to solve for the derivatives of all the other trig functions. The student is getting a hang of this, but forgetting a few rules."
"The student had a test for tonight to finish preparing for. We had covered some of the review last session and then spent the whole time today just going over the review. He would pick out problems he wanted to go over and then would try them to see if he was getting them correct or not. Despite a few minor errors, he was mostly doing everything well. He also said he was feeling more confident and ready for the test."
"We began covering the basics of integration, including antiderivatives, approximation using summation and Riemann methods, and techniques such as integration by parts and substitution. I felt that there were a few too many topics to cover very thoroughly, and the student had some issues with recalling some rules of integration and derivation. It seemed more difficult for him to understand the concept of integration and remembering the rules. I encouraged practicing thoroughly on his own between this meeting and the next."
"Today the student and I reviewed the concept of the power rule, product rule, and quotient rule using the chain rule. In order to note progress in him, he and I went over the exercises he had some trouble with in his homework. I can definitely see a lot progress in him, especially judging when and where he will use different theorems and rules while taking derivatives. He had no struggle with any of the exercises we practiced today. I left some homework for him so that he practices some log derivatives."
"The student and I covered graphical equations as well as reviewed numerous geometry problems pertaining particularly to triangles and parallel lines. I left some optional problems for him to do in his problem sets in his textbook because I felt like he really understood the material we covered today."
"In this session, we covered derivatives of inverse trigonometric functions, absolute extrema and relative extrema. She wanted to clarify ideas her teacher had gone over in class (particularly how to generalize the derivative of inverse functions). Furthermore, she also wanted to get ahead and we covered ideas concerning global and relative extrema. She had several practice problems from her textbook. Furthermore, she had a very pleasant demeanor and was very motivated."
"I worked with the student on his Chapter 4 homework review which covered matrix addition, scalar multiplication, matrix multiplication, and solving systems of equations with row echelon reduction. He gets most of the concepts quickly. We are meeting again next Sunday."
"The student and I worked on multiplication tables as well as fractions, decimals multiplication into parts and division. This time I use candy to visually represent what I was teaching her, and it worked beautifully! I will continue to use visual prompts at the request of her mother who also saw how well it worked. She continues to do well and we also finished working on her homework. Good job!"
"Today the student and I covered her parametrics homework. We discussed a problem involving parametrics in which we had to understand the derivation of the integral that gives us the surface area of a circular section of a sphere.
She understood her homework very well and we were able to move on to a practice book. We worked on some problems near the beginning of the book and I assigned a chapter and a half to cover. She will take a test in these sections and grade herself. We will cover more questions during the next session."

"The student and I worked on applications of logs and exponentials. The subject of the word problems were finance questions, compound interest, and growth rate and decay."
"The session began with the student and I working together to complete his math homework. He was responsible for solving number stories that required the conversion of measurements between metric and customary measurements. I taught him how to convert various measurements. We then worked together to complete each of the number stories."
