Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We reviewed all homework and organized her notebook. The student completed her science homework on pedigree charts and sex linked genetic traits. She benefited from the conversation about sex linked traits prior to the homework as I think it helped her better understand the questions. She then completed her math homework on percent increase and percent decrease. We discussed her Highway Man quiz and she felt she did well on it. The goal is for her to have ownership of her homework and organization and I am seeing her do that."
"In today's lesson I mostly helped the student outline his research paper. We worked on the research question and the introduction, and I helped him look for some relevant books at the library. I also helped him finalize his current events paper. I told him he needs to do some reading and writing for the research paper before our next lesson."
"Today we covered his performance on past exams and quizzes, as well as upcoming assignments. The student had a big Biology test on DNA/RNA in the past week, and felt confident that he had prepared adequately. We discussed building upon the flashcards, self-quizzing, and reviewing notes for the next test. We also worked on English, where he is beginning Julius Caesar. To work on reading comprehension, in preparation for a quiz, I showed him how to break down sections of a play, reading aloud for literary devices (such as puns, metaphors, alliteration), and reviewing meaning of larger passages. We also looked at resources for contextualizing the play and understanding the big themes. A final skill we worked on was outlining. This helped organize his thoughts in response to the teacher's prompts. In addition, we discussed how this technique will help meet page requirements and construct well-organized essays. His grades are showing improvement, particularly in Biology, and he has opportunities for extra credit."
"The student is doing really well reading "Rodrick Rules" and is already excited about reading the next book. In the school tests, he is supposed to answer questions about a story he has read in the school reader. The questions are difficult, and ask him to refer back to the text for answers, and the student definitely struggles with this. So, yesterday I had him answer specific questions about "Rodrick Rules", many of which required him to refer back to the text. I am going to work specifically with his reader on Thursday and try to help him come up with a strategy for the test. He is so sweet and smart and I very much want him to succeed."
"We covered a writing assignment in Spanish to compare two characters from two different reading passages. I am thinking that it could be beneficial to have one hour and thirty minutes with her when we have longer assignments to make sure we get them completed. I feel this will helps us since we are building her thinking and reading comprehension skills. Once she gets to answering the questions, the answers are stellar."
"The student is doing great with his multiplication! He beat his previous record with his flash cards. When we started doing subtraction across 0s. He did a great job, breaking another record! We finished the session working on fractions."
