Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I did some very good work today, working on grammar and vocabulary, particularly comma splices and run-on sentences. We also took a look at the role political scientists play in the world, and what it means to be a lobbyist."
"This afternoon, the student and I worked through a first draft of his Lou Gehrig essay. I had helped the student with his research for this paper last month, and it is truly nice to see that the student is doing a good job of employing some of the techniques I taught him at that time. This afternoon, we worked on editing his draft for both content and construction issues. He was receptive to my feedback and focused hard on the task at hand."
"The student had two papers due on Monday, so I did some editing on those over the weekend. She got 100% on one of them and the other one hasn't been turned back yet. In the actual tutoring session, we focused on studying for a test on Lord of the Flies. Her teacher had given her a good study guide. We went through and made sure that she understood each idea. I helped her tie back the characters, conflicts, and symbols to the main theme."
"We reviewed punctuation, and how to prepare to write. The student was very receptive to the material we covered, and she completed the exercises quickly and accurately. We discussed editing written work, and reading aloud to hear grammatical mistakes in her work."
"I covered the concepts of verbs in the present and the past. The verbs were to be, to go, to like, and to have. The student was happy with the material. I left some practice for her."
"We worked more on sight words today. We did an activity where the student had to trace a word, write it out, cut out the letters and glue them on to the sheet, and write a sentence with the word in it. I had paper plates with sight words printed on them, and we played a game where he had to read the word then throw the plate like a Frisbee and try to hit a target. After that we played sight word bingo, did some reading, and played the Frisbee game again with the leftover time we had. He is doing fantastic with the sight words! There are only a few that he doesn't recognize right away, and we need to work on the /th/ and /ch/ sounds, but other than that he is really showing great progress. He is also doing really well with not talking as much during sessions."
