Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
We first reviewed the geometry problems assigned from the last session. After confirming the student's mastery of the material we moved on to challenging algebra problems. The concepts weren't hard for him to understand. I implemented the minute rule again to keep him from rushing, and his performance improved. I assigned him more challenging problems to practice.
The student and I covered more rotational kinematics problems from her physics class. We talked about when to use energy conservation, what kinds of energies are involved in rotating problems, and different kinds of moment of inertia. This material is tricky because it hinges pretty heavily on choosing the correct moment of inertia and correct pivot points for torques. She seems to understand the material pretty well, and was readily able to understand the ideas I tried to get across! She is a great student!
The student and I covered data sufficiency questions from the official guide. He could benefit from pushing his math a little bit further on each step. His thought process is fairly good and he can set up most of the questions, but he needs to follow through further. I think if he can follow through more, he should see an increase in correct answers for the medium questions. Next session we are turning to verbal.
Today, we covered the rest of Soil Formation. We also went over questions from population ecology and how to solve the math problems that will be seen on the AP test. We began covering Energy Use. I told the student to practice some short answer responses in order to prepare for the written portion of the exam. We scheduled the next session for tomorrow.
Waves, simple harmonic motion. The student understands the material, and asks very good questions the points he doesn't understand. He definitely seems to benefit from the practice problems we do online.
The student and I are just getting started working together. I am coming up to speed to his level with the materials.
