Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We began with a usual introductory discussion about the student's previous history with the exam, and her particular feelings about where her strengths and weaknesses lie. I then shared a few of my own thoughts about the most productive mindset with which to approach tutoring and the different objectives we would have together along the way. I then gave her a short section of practice verbal problems to work through. Her resultant score told me that it was important to spend our early time focusing more specifically on building a test taking approach. I then discussed a few different points of view for how to approach both the sentence completion and passage based questions. We worked through a set of practice problems together (out loud) to reinforce specificity in the approach. I thought it was a productive session. She is very bright and will have no issues developing her own test taking approach, but more time needs to be spent working towards that goal first."
"During my second session with the students, we focused on the essay and critical reading portions of the SAT. We briefly discussed at the beginning how to approach studying the vocabulary lists I had provided since our last session via email. I told them to focus on the words that would likely be the most helpful. I administered the 25-minute SAT essay. After reading through each of their essays and providing them both with my feedback, we moved on to a critical reading section. The students did very well on the passages we worked on today. They are doing well on time as well. For our next session on Friday, I plan to introduce a timed writing multiple-choice section in addition to administering another essay prompt."
"I met with the student for the first time today, and I had a great time reviewing material and setting up her study schedule. We went over some Math and Sentence Completions."
