"In our first meeting, I assessed the student's reading. I identified letter sounds, some of the short vowel sounds, and sight words as topics we would need to address. He knows the alphabet. I will work on helping him solidify his letter sounds then teach him to blend letter sounds together to sound out words. I also taught him a reading strategy called "Eagle Eye." With this strategy, he can look at the first letter of a word then look at a picture to try to figure out the word. We had a lot of fun reading a book together and trying this strategy. He is an enthusiastic learner and so much fun to work with."
"I gave the student an envelope for the letters he wrote to friends in San Diego. On the envelope, he wrote the address of his kindergarten teacher at his former school to practice writing. For spelling, we did an initial dictation of his 10 new words for the week, which all contain the short "o" sound. We will continue to focus on words that end in "ong." We also worked on phonics. We extended our exploration of long vowel sounds to the pairs "oe" and "ue". He read 10 sentences that included words containing these vowel combinations and found and underlined those vowels. He read an entire book as well as a few passages from a Dr. Seuss book. He then read from the books "Magic Numbers" and "Magic Shapes.""
"Worked on reading concepts high frequency words from graded word lists, Math concepts, adding and subtracting three digit problems using regrouping, writing numbers involving thousands in words."
