Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The older student worked on her math homework, which was equivalent fractions with a grid. I introduced common denominators as another way to find equivalent fractions and we practiced using both calculations and drawing to find relative values of fractions. We then worked on her social studies project, which will be a state report on Indiana. We read about the history of Indiana and I brought in concepts like westward expansion, economic development, and Native American treaties, which are part of the material for her upcoming test."
"The student and I worked on her algebra two homework, her world history homework, her English homework, and her chemistry homework. For math, we worked on solving fractions. For history class, we worked on specific events that occurred during World War II. For English, we worked on her root word packets. For chemistry, we finished up her post lab. She seemed to be understanding the material pretty well today."
"Student and I continued working on his college algebra study guide for his test the next day. We worked on transformations, piecewise functions, and absolute value functions. We watched the tutorial videos provided by his teacher to help him understand things. He continued to study throughout the night after I left, and I'm proud of the work he accomplished."
"The student and I discussed integration in order to find areas bounded by lines and curves. He was very clear and thorough in his thinking. Basic sign conventions about positive and negative values remain tricky to master, but he showed a great attitude toward mastering the material. His ability and maturity will continue to be assets for the course."
"We reviewed the study guide that the student was given in advance of his upcoming midterm. For proofs, I suggested that he explore the various relationships between the given information and what was sought in the problem to help find the solution. I'll be curious to go over the results of his midterm with him."
"The student and I held an intense session in order to review for her test. We used the practice test to check answers, discuss difficult concepts, and review procedures to find derivatives. I emphasized the connections between concepts and proposed different strategies for solving problems. (I left her with my notes.) She is confident of doing well."
