Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we focused on preparing for the student's test on Tuesday. We reviewed his study of angles, transformations, and parallel lines cut with a transversal. We learned a method for rotation around a point, which he did not spend a lot of time on in class. We reviewed his flash cards (and added one), which proved successful in helping him memorize important formulas and definitions. We also discussed test-taking strategies: take your time, check your work, and do the easiest ones first. We are hoping to see an improvement. I wish him luck!"
"We continued the student's test prep, this time working with the homework and review book. He has improved a lot on the concept of common multiples, addition, and subtraction with fractions, and we covered addition and subtraction with mixed numbers. He had a little trouble renaming whole numbers in order to subtract fractions, which is part of his larger issue with fractions as parts of a whole (he will follow the steps well but sometimes will say that 1/4 is greater than 1, for instance). We will work on word problems more to solidify fractions as concrete rather than abstract concepts. We then worked on geometry for a change of pace, and he did well with triangle types and areas."
"Student had a test on Friday in his college algebra class. This session was dedicated to studying for this test. Most of the review we did was over graphs and polynomials. There was a lot of information that he did not understand, and I tried to explain it to the best of my ability. He was very positive about it all though, studying all night through the next couple days."
"We worked on determining the appropriate operation to solve problems which included a review of math vocabulary. She is also working on mastery of multiplication facts, place value and addition of multi-digit numbers."
"The student wanted to review the practice AP exam multiple choice questions we went over last time because he has a test this week over that. We went through each one and I wrote down extra notes he could study, and tricky things to watch out for. We had about 30 minutes left at that point, and he also had a practice PSAT manual that he wanted to go over before the actual PSAT test also this coming week. It had 17 sample math questions and we were able to get through all of them right by the end of the session."
"We briefly looked at the challenge problem (estimate the amount in a large stack of money) and then worked on some speed challenges focused on basic number fluency."
