Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session, we went over the student's communications homework. For the first problem, I made up an example to explain the concepts of function scaling/shifting and energy/power of a signal. The next problem involved testing for linearity, causality, and time-invariance. We had previously discussed all of these except for causality when reviewing the lecture notes, so the homework problem was a good opportunity to test what he learned. The student did well."
"The student and I covered kinematics, specifically free-fall motion, graphical analysis and word problems. The student did a great job."
"Today we went over homework dealing with topics such as Gauss's law, Coulomb's law, and related topics. We also reviewed some calculus."
"The student and I spent the day working on Le Chatelier's principle and she worked on her online homework. I broke down the different ways you could influence the direction of reaction (changing temp, volume, pressure, and concentration). She picked up the concepts very quickly and was able to complete the worksheet on her own. I left her with a summary sheet explaining what we had gone over and key mistakes to watch out for. Overall, she seemed very confident about her upcoming test."
"Today we did experiments involving exothermic and endothermic reactions. We mixed urea and water and felt the temperature change (this is an endothermic reaction). We attempted to make hot ice by reacting baking soda and vinegar, boiling off the excess water so we had super concentrated sodium acetate, then supercooling it and having the liquid crystallize upon pouring it from the container. We weren't able to boil enough water off in our scheduled time, so I may try to boil it off and bring it for him next week."
"We covered genetic engineering, cloning, PCR, gel electrophoresis, recombinant DNA, vectors, DNA fingerprinting. We went over the goals of each and the processes involved. We went over the study guide and worksheets she had. This was a review for her test on Friday. I had her explain to me the various processes and quizzed her on the concepts."
