"The student and I worked with her reading comprehension. We reviewed using the ACT reading comprehension text. She particularly needed help with parsing sentences into understandable components and summarizing the main idea of a paragraph (she generally summarizes the entire idea, rather than the details of the particular paragraph). We organized a series of questions to ask that she can use to guide herself through creating a summary. We also discussed meeting with her parents to discuss where she is at with her English teacher and succeeding in the class."
"The student began working on an English class assignment today: writing an ACT essay. It was a bit of a paradigm shift from a standard research essay, but she learned the new system well. She did the majority of the pre-write and organization today. Good job!"
"This session gave the student an opportunity to develop and complete a response to the book "The Rocket Boys." He answered questions pertaining to the characters, plots, and themes presented in the book. We analyzed the prompts and answered each question. He asked me about specific points in the book, and I clarified."
"We read two long passages, answered multiple choice, short answer questions and others requiring longer responses. The student seems to be between 3rd and 4th grade reading and writing. He's a delight to work with."
"I looked at the student's reading and questions and was actually quite surprised. He did really well, and we didn't have as much to talk about as I'd thought! Regardless, we still dug a bit into the story to talk about characters' emotions and the idea of "theme." Then we started writing! I wanted the student to make up some new characters for next time."
"The student read 2 chapters in her chapter book and she summarized what was happened in each chapter for me. We talked about what we can do to help her understand and retain what she is reading. We also did some math pages out of her workbook."
