Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I worked through problems that focused on factoring quadratics and certain types of cubic equations. I also taught him a new method of factoring quadratics by grouping which is generally much faster than the "brute force" method he had previously employed."
"The student and I went over the topics he has been struggling most with over the last few weeks; percent change, algebraic equations, and integers. I was happy to see that he can tackle most percent change problems with ease now, and we went through numerous algebraic equations step by step so he understood why we need to keep track of our work, and how to double-check answers once you get them. Integers are mostly a review from 7th grade, but we worked with them to make sure he has manipulating negative numbers down pat. We spent a little time reviewing geometry as well, since that will certainly be on the test and will play a large role in 8th grade math. I think the best approach is to be a little more strict about writing every problem out and doing problems the same way every time."
"We looked at how to interpret word problems and create equations out of them, which could then be solved to find answers. We reviewed algebraic manipulations of equations and how to input the values given in the problem into an equation to find a solution."
"In yesterday's session, the student and I went over his math quiz from last week and we did some practice problems on the topics that he covered over the last week. As far as his quiz goes, we went over all of the problems and I went through what he could do next time to prevent making the same mistakes. After the quiz review, we went over complex number simplification, completing the square and regular simplification problems. We will be meeting next Monday to go over more problems and techniques before his test on Tuesday. Overall, I think yesterday's session went well."
"Today the student and I worked on multiplying and dividing rational expressions. She seems much more confident in the material and has shown a lot of improvement. During our next session we will cover adding and subtracting rational expressions."
"We started to review various topics for the student's geometry test on Friday. Topics include proofs, line segments, angles, inductive and deductive reasoning, and conditional/ biconditional statements. The student will provide a review sheet at our next session."
