Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We did a number of different critical reading passages from both the SAT and ACT. I think it is now clear to the student the difference practice makes."
"Today we drilled or the writing section. We also reviewed commonly tested vocabulary items. The student is performing much better in the writing section than he was earlier."
"The student worked on letters and reading today. She read a book about Babs, the elephant who was too heavy to ride in a hot air balloon, and all of the words in the word tree at the end of "Drop It, Rocket.""
"The student and I focused on vocabulary again, this time reviewing all of the words she has seen previously and adding on about 20 new words. We also looked at some passage-based questions again and she did pretty well on them."
"The student and I began by going over some problems from his homework. Next, we worked on some math problems together. For homework, she will write a timed essay and complete some critical reading practice sections."
"The student said that he is strongest in math, so we focused on the other two sections in this first session. He has an incredible vocabulary for an 8th-grader, but can use some tips on how to best use that vocabulary to find the best answers to the verbal section. We also did a grammar section, where he understands sentence construction, but can use some work on how to apply it."
"The student and I spent the session practicing multiplication tables. We practiced multiples of two and three, and we also went over how to add fractions. At the end of the session, she felt more comfortable with the material we went over, and she had a much better grasp on fractions! For future sessions, we are going to heavily review/practice her multiplication tables, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in fractions, basic geometry, and measurements."
"We worked through two math sections and reviewed the student's mistakes. Her fundamentals are strong and a little tweaking will improve her score. I noticed on her PSAT that her errors on the reading section seem to come on sentence completion, so we worked through several of them, focusing on using context clues and eliminating wrong answers on the ones where she doesn't automatically know the right answer."
"During this session, the student and I worked on reading comprehension. We discussed strategies and then I had him read a passage about Abraham Lincoln. I'm trying to get him used to a four stop process: read, define vocab, take notes, and answer questions. He followed the four steps but still missed three out of the six practice questions. We talked about why he got the questions wrong. I think that he will improve."
"Reviewed the student's homework. We reviewed all questions and discussed the math formulas and vocabulary with which she was not familiar. She misunderstood some of the reading passages and thought some questions were confusing, so I reassured her that with practice she would become much more comfortable with the test. She has a great attitude and work ethic, so I believe she can greatly improve her score."
"Reviewed AP US History for quiz preparation. Discussed the Revolutionary War, the Articles of Confederation, Constitutional Convention, Federalists v. Anti-Federalists, and Federalists v. Jeffersonian Republicans. Elaborated on questions analysis and choosing appropriate examples for SAT Writing."
"The student and I reviewed the SAT practice test she had done that week. When she takes a second look at the question, she almost always gets them right. I told her if she slows down that may help her to really focus and not make those mistakes. She will do a "mock" test Saturday morning to simulate test day."
