Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today the student and I reviewed simplifying radical expressions. Then we learned about imaginary numbers, complex conjugates, and solving quadratic equations using factoring and the quadratic equation. We also talked about the discriminant and how it tells us if there are 2 solutions or 1 and if the solutions are real or imaginary."
"The student and I reviewed his geometry HW covering volume of cones, pyramids, and cylinders. He didn't have his class notes today, and I asked him to have them next time. I know how to teach him the material, but I'd like to see how he is learning in class and the methods his teacher uses."
"Reviewed thermodynamics and fluids, buoyant force, Bernoulli's equation, Archimedes' principal, heat capacity, specific hear, PV work, ideal gas law, latent heat, engines, engine efficiency, and the Carnot cycle."
"Went over a little bit of math. It turned out all of the problems the student was having issues with came down to factoring/minor arithmetic errors, so that was definitely good. Worked out a couple mnemonic devices to help with the vocab quiz later this week. "
"The student and I went over his homework problems tonight. He seemed very confident with his understanding of the material and was proud that he received an A on his class assignment from last week. Also, his mom said that the teacher emailed her about how well he is doing in the class. We are scheduling reoccurring sessions every Tuesday night."
"The student and I worked on MCAT questions. The first time we worked on MCAT questions, it seemed to really help him out because we were going over content he had already learned and seeing how it was tested on the MCAT. I'm trying to teach him all new content in the difficult way that the MCAT tests it."
"In the last session with the student, we covered aldehydes and ketones. We reviewed her last exam, and highlighted the main point that she will have to review for her final exam. This primarily dealt with the formation of resonance structures from different compounds. She also covered several synthesis questions, and quite comfortably went through most of them."
"Reviewed questions on lecture exams for chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, and biology, covered topics in organic chemistry and physics, discussed ways to approach problems in the physical sciences section, completed high-yield problems in physics, and assigned reading and hw for next session."
"Today we covered phase changes, some thermodynamics, electrochemistry and fluids. The student is doing great. She has worked really hard and I'm confident she will do well on the MCAT. I have encouraged her to email me with any questions that she has as she continues to study."
"The student and I began by going over some general chemistry material, that she had questions about. We went over three different stoichiometry problems that she had difficulty with, and she seemed to understand the principles behind them after going over the questions. We then moved on to going over some organic chemistry problems, I assigned her. She was able to answer most of these questions, showing a vast improvement, even in just a week, in her understanding and memory of the organic chemistry material. We then concluded the session, by doing two biological science passages together, which she was generally able to do well, and in the prescribed amount of time. She needed help with some digestive system material, so I suggested she review this topic again, and I will test her on it next session."
"Prior to this session, the student had completed another full length practice exam. Her score dropped to a 22, with an 8 in biological sciences and 7s in both verbal reasoning and physical sciences. We reviewed the Biological sciences section, from the full length practice test, which covered a variety of biology and organic chemistry principles, and then we did a practice biological sciences passage, that focused on the properties of bacterial gene transfer. She is still working on finding a good pace to read the passage and questions at, because it seems like sometimes she skips over important information. Several of the questions she missed during the practice test were missed because she didn't read the question properly. She is continuing to work on memorizing the equations for the physical sciences section, as well as beginning to review the more difficult topics, that she needs to work on. At our next session, we will be reviewing a physical sciences practice exam."
"This was our last session, and the student has made great strides. She has developed a strong intuition for finding the correct answer. She has also mastered a lot of biology material since our first session. During this last session, she was able to answer many of the questions from the several biological sciences passages we covered with minimal guidance."
