Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over how to use her new graphing calculator as well as graphing growth and exponential decay functions. Calculating the percent decay, identifying the decay or growth factor, and determining half life were also reviewed."
"We began his 3rd Six Weeks Honors Geography project. He has to interview someone who has lived in a foreign country for an extended period of time, so he chose me. We finished 8 out of the 15 questions he needed. His project is due in mid-December."
"Student has started working on rational functions, and was doing vertical, horizontal, and oblique asymptotes, along with end behavior. Her main problem comes when she has to use polynomial long division to find the oblique asymptote. However, she has an overall good grasp of the material. After that, we did some test prep, and signed her up for the April ACT."
"The student is doing a really great job with his chemistry. He recently got two tests back-- he got 93 on one and 100 on the other. We went over molarity this session, and he showed me what topics will be on the final. The important thing, especially as we get into molarity and solutions, is to continue to connect the new topics to things we have already done. He seems to have a good grasp of the bigger picture."
"The student and I spent most of our time going over two logical reasoning sections that she did. We spent a good amount of time talking about ways to know which questions to try and which questions to skip. We also worked through a couple of difficult logic games. She found out that she got extra time on the test, so from now on, we will work within our new time limits."
"During this session we worked on a reading assignment with questions that the student had for homework. After this we worked on his math worksheet which was on division. Finally we played the dice game to end the session."
"The student and I practiced memorizing old and new roots, and applying them to unknown words. He needs more work on committing his roots to memory, so we don't have to go over and review past material as much."
"Essay writing; critical reading; sentence completion Progress made with general test-taking strategies; reading comprehension strategies; essay outlining and writing; vocabulary building. Introduced the idea of a vocabulary log, to be completed on the students' own time, to help build vocabulary."
"The student and I went over an essay I had him write in response to an SAT prompt. The essay had good structure and ideas. We also did practice exercises out of the student's SAT practice book. His speed is getting better every week and next week our session will focus on time-saving strategies for the actual test."
"We reviewed the homework I assigned the student including some math and science questions she had. We also went over exam essay writing, some strategies for approaching science questions, additional math concepts and strategies, and how to approach the reading section."
"Worked ahead with the student on his next chapter of math, starting a definition and equation sheet for his next major area of algebra. Introduced concepts and terms for graphs and functions and then had a mini quiz at the end of the lesson."
"We worked on lesson 44. This included surface area, volume, ratios, proportions, word problems, graphing, writing function equations, solving functions given equations and ordered pairs. We also did simplification number and variable problems. Today we worked all problems out on a white board and the student said it made the problems easier. I noticed she grasped problems better this way."
