Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today I worked with the student and we reviewed scientific notation and some of the concepts we did last time. We also worked with radicals and I showed the student the rules for adding/subtracting radicals versus multiplying and dividing radicals. Although this was a new concept for the student, I think she is doing very well and is learning a tremendous amount from our lessons. I know she will be prepared for Algebra I next year!!!"
"The student worked on a story for homework. Then he worked on story comprehension. We concentrated on the main idea and details. He also worked on vocabulary and overall understanding of the story. Then he worked on figures and whether they are flipped, turned over or slided over. He also worked on multiplication facts. He did great on everything."
"The student's class was working on Probability and Possibility. She had switched into the class and was missing a little background on both topics so I caught her up by starting with easy-to-grasp situations like dice and by the end, we were finding the probability of complex series of card draws from a 52 card deck. Also showed her how to use Pascal's Triangle to predict how many possible outcomes can occur."
"In this session, we worked on all areas of the SAT, including: two critical reading sections (along with one long reading passage), one writing section, and the fill-in portion of one math section. The student demonstrated a strong capacity for success in all areas so primary focus was placed upon ensuring he had the strategies and vocabulary to tackle the few difficult questions in the critical reading portion of the test that posed him some semblance of trouble."
"The student and I reviewed Chapters 5-12 in Book III of A Tale of Two Cities. Since he has a quiz over Chapter 9-12 tomorrow, we reviewed these chapters in great detail. Although we covered content and the significance of certain devices/motifs, he still has to read these chapters in order to better understand the novel."
"In preparation for the unit test, reviewed all the details of the basics of the nervous system, including resting potential, action potential, threshold, sodium potassium pump, potassium and sodium channels, as well as the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system."
"This session, the student and I went through some science homework together. She seems to be very interested in this topic which is nice to see. She is learning some confusing topics regarding chemistry, but she seems to be working hard in mastering these topics and finishing her homework in a timely manner."
"Microeconomics- Monopoly vs. Competitive firms Factors leading to the causes of monopolies 'Natural monopolies" Government-supported monopolies Price-setting powers of monopolistic firms Influence of quantity production on prices in a monopolistic market vs. a competitive market."
"Today we discussed the concept of total sum of angles of a polygon, and how to find this. Practiced these skills extensively using class-assigned worksheets. Also went over parallelograms and similarly practiced using the geometrical relations to solve equations and word problems. Practiced parallelogram proofs. We also went over a quiz from class that heavily practiced the u-substitution technique for integration, in particular for rational functions."
"The student and I worked primarily on the math section today, reviewing concepts and practicing understanding the questions. We worked a bit on the reading as well, and briefly covered the grammar portion of the writing to discuss strategies. I want him to do at least three practice sections this week (one from each subject). We discussed the strategy behind leaving questions blank vs. guessing."
"The student and I worked on Graphs and Reflection. We also reviewed operations with fractions, decimals, and mixed numbers. We reviewed the properties of basic geometric figures and applied the concepts by solving assessment test style geometry questions."
"Went through Exam 3. The student is showing a lot of improvement and is knowledgeable with the material at the end of the session today. Once she makes her equation sheet (which we agreed would be done by Friday), I think she will only continue to do well on this material."
