Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we worked on elapsed time homework in preparation for her test. The student is having some trouble with adding and subtracting times that will lead her into a new day. I tried explaining to her to do it increments of 12 hours to simplify the process."
"Continued working on the reading passages. She's a lot more comfortable and doing much better with the passages with her new technique for writing words by the passages for when she goes back and scans. Then we went over some more vocabulary words."
"Reviewed new unit consisting of how to find surface area, lateral surface area, and volume of various prism shapes (triangular, rectangular etc.). Went through homework assignment on this topic and some additional practice problems. Student can now identify the difference between lateral SA and general SA of an object and has a better grasp on what all of these concepts represent."
"We reviewed another draft of her second paper on a t test article. We also covered manova and an article that used this test. I discussed her post with her to help her understand the paper's tests well. We just barely started discussion on correlation and regression, but will cover that next time."
"We took a look at some of his College Algebra homework over functions, which was largely review, thanks to our past work together. We also started looking ahead to the rest of the student's semester and the maintenance of his burgeoning organizational skills."
"Edited and did research for the background paper for the student's science fair. Went over more efficient uses of time when researching, what qualifies as a good source, and how to frame research essays to be clear and cohesive. Still working on better studying strategies to keep focus, stay on track, do things in order, and efficiently when I am not there."
"We covered using Simpson's and the Trapezoidal rule for finding the integral of discrete data points, and how these methods combine with the method of disks for finding volumes of revolution. We also reviewed how to set up math word problems in her SAT practice book, and other basic math properties like trigonometry and associated geometry rules. "
"Today we continued working on the student's English assignment. The session was one of the most enjoyable and productive we've had. He needed to come up with three pieces of textual evidence to support each of the three topic sentences that we had developed during our last session. I decided that the best way to approach this task would be to model effective textual analysis for him. I began by having him identify interesting parts of the reading, and then, together, we went through and I shared what I took from the reading. I also prompted him to think about the reading from a skeptical, analytical perspective. I think he gained a real appreciation and understanding of how literature is supposed to be read in an academic context, and he even seemed to enjoy the process. I couldn't be happier."
"The student and I worked on more science homework, specifically earth science and the formation of sedimentary rocks. We also covered strategies for effectiveness on tests including using answer choices to guide thought about a question, putting our pencils on the actual information in a chart before marking an answer, and pacing. All this is intended to aid with test anxiety."
"Reviewed first two questions from the final exam including graph theory and differentiation. How to find points of intersection from equations of two lines. Using the first and second derivative to find a maximum or minimum, and how derivatives are used in other areas of mathematics and their importance."
"We went over the rough draft of her Nazi Germany essay. She corrected the problems that her teacher had pointed out and made some additional changes. She has a test on Friday, so we also spent a bit of time reviewing semicolons and when to use them. Finally, we continued to work on her vocabulary words, which will also be tested on Friday."
"Student 1: We worked on Linear Equations in two variables, x/y coordinates, Intercepts and slopes of straight lines.
Student 2: We worked on worksheets that had to do with Comparing Fractions, Matching Fractions, and Problem solving. We will work on more advanced problems next session."
