Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"In this session we worked more with trig functions, including graphing them. I emphasized the importance of the unit circle, and showed him a few ways that it can be used in every aspect of this material. After a little work he is doing well, although he sometimes tries to do too much work in his head and makes minor mistakes. More practice and familiarity with the unit circle should alleviate this."
"*Reviewed sentence structure and expression *Practiced writing sentences to express details of events *Introduction of use of semicolon, comma and transition words *Review of spelling words *Reviewed rounding decimals to nearest tenth *Introduced converting fractions to ratios; coordinates to a line graph; and determining ratios *Practiced speed addition/subtraction/multiplication/division aloud"
"Today we covered function transformations and applications. From the problems I left him, he expressed confusion and was not sure where to start. His biggest issue is visualizing the situation detailed in the problems, and then figuring out what he knows from that visualization. To slow it down, we reviewed power rules and functions, as well as logarithm rules and more basic transformations, to which he responded well. We also covered manipulating numbers and fractions to make solving easier. I left him with practice problems from the book."
"The student and I continued our tutorial sessions and during our summer session we reviewed some of the previous material he completed during the regular school year. His mother informed me that his final grade was a C- which is a big improvement of F prior to the tutorial sessions! Our next step is to bring him up to the B to A range!"
"We started on integrals! We did substitution as well as definite integrals. I just saw her test 2, which she got a 93 on, so I am very excited for that! I left him with some problems just to look over and understand the concepts; it does get complex from here on out. I am having a great time teaching him!"
"The student and I went over multiplication. We specifically covered 7's and 8's. She did fairly well, and was able to get all of the 7's and 8's flashcards correct. I asked her to practice writing them again, and to focus on the specific multiplication facts she was getting incorrect."
"The student was starting a new chapter and we worked through all his homework problems that will be similar to his next test for three sections of the chapter. The student just needed some help getting a hang of the main concepts and then was doing similar problems very well. We are planning another session soon to pick up where we left off."
"We began working through a general review packet for the student's comprehensive test at the end of the month. We worked 1-2 problems of each type if he felt comfortable. We have not reached any problems that show major problems or concerns at this time. I instructed him to work ahead in the packet. He is to complete any problems he feels comfortable with and label them with a check mark. He is to attempt medium problems and label them. We will meet next on Tuesday."
"The student and I covered algebraic word problems that required skill development in ratios. We also covered equations and percentages to decimal conversion. She seems to be able to do the math mechanics just fine! We will need to work on solving equations more thoroughly for our next session."
"We covered representing integers, discounts, and sales prices. I did not review any scores to gauge progress just yet. The student had a good conceptual grasp of the material covered during the session. We will practice finding the product of decimals and whole numbers next. I gave him a practice workbook and assigned comparing and ordering fractions and decimals. I don't have any major concerns from this session."
"We reviewed for the student's test coming up on Monday. We went over rational and negative exponents, complex conjugates and complex numbers, and imaginary numbers. We also got to spend time on powers of i, FOILing, combining like terms, and simplifying expressions."
"Today we studied for the upcoming test on PEMDAS, complex operations, multi-variable equations, and exponents. Excellent work by the student. I've advised him to slow down and check his work thoroughly just in case."
