Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I spent the entire session reviewing for her Math final. We went through her most recent test and worked through a number of problems in her review packet, stopping to discuss concepts and strategies that were unclear or that she needed a refresh on - i.e., long division (some difficulty with how to begin then with borrowing when subtracting rows), multiplication of decimals (reviewed process and how to determine where to place decimal point in the product), multiplication of fractions (discussed shortcut of cancelling out common factors across the diagonal), addition of fractions (review of working with least common denominator), drawing a diagram to represent fractions, finding the average (basic formula as well as how to determine in a word problem and when working with a set of data on a line plot). We also touched on the formulas for volume, area of a rectangle and area of triangle, and graphing on the coordinate plane. Overall very good, would again just advise to read each question completely and carefully and be sure to understand what is being asked, and how to utilize the information given to solve the problem."
"The student and I went over some basic concepts so that I could get a sense of where he is at. Things he excelled at included reading and creating graphs, addition tables and simplifying fractions. What he needed a lot more practice on was adding and subtracting with negative numbers. He improved greatly by using a number line. I gave him the rules on whether to move left/right when adding/subtracting either positive/negative numbers. His only problem moving forward was jumping into the addition and subtraction problems without checking which way to move. I encouraged him to just take a moment to check which way he should move before he solves a problem until he gets more practice with them. Great first session!"
"We started with the student's math homework. He had to complete some mixed number addition and subtraction practice. He did very well with borrowing from the whole number to create an improper fraction if the number he was subtracting from was smaller. After his homework, we did some number puzzles. These puzzles were mostly based on finding patterns in the factors, which was a challenge for him. For the last ten minutes we did another tangrams puzzle."
"This session we continued going over his last test because he was able to submit test corrections. We then moved to his new section which focused on the area of sectors. The student was able to make it through a majority of his assignment."
"The student and I prepared her for her upcoming exam covering probability, combinations, complimentary probability, cards and dice. We worked through her practice workbook and she did well overall. The only little issue that I noticed was understanding the wording of a question and what exactly it was asking (i.e. at most, in favor, against). We went over a few problems like those until she felt more comfortable with them."
"During this session, the student and I broke down more AP problems that she was having trouble with. Since the AP test is this week, today was our last session, so I wished the student the best on the AP exam which I know she'll do great on. Her confidence level is rising the more she studies and works through problems on her own, so I let her know to keep studying and working hard until the day of the exam."
