Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we covered three difficult topics and reviewed a fourth. I had given her a brief intro to organic chemistry last time and we reviewed this. After, we looked at nuclear chemistry and quantum chemistry to the capacity she will probably need to know them for the test. This is all pretty new material for her as most AP classes do not cover these difficult topics, so it was a tough day and we will have to review this material more than once. However, the few questions on these difficult topics can really boost her score on her next SAT chem, as many people don't get them right. I left her with reviewing what we learned today, plus the acids, bases, and solubility rules. No concerns."
"After discussing his previous scores and what particular topics we would be focusing on, he and I started on the English portion of the ACT. We made it through one complete practice test and I wrote down the types of problems he missed. We also discussed any problems that he wasn't confident about but still answered correctly. I gave his a sheet that highlights the things that he can work on in this section and also assigned him 2 practice test sections to work on. So far he seems willing to work hard and was very good to work with."
"The student and I went over the general format and strategy of the ACT. We went over the math section and she did well in terms of understanding the concepts. What we need to focus on is the strategy for the test, so that she can pick up her speed and learn the easy tricks on the math section."
"She and I had another great session today. She seemed to retain a lot of the info we talked about on Sunday and applied it well to her homework. We started by going through problems she had difficulty with from Sunday and most of the issues were very easily remedied once she saw her mistake. We started the new material for today with two more science sections and she applied the new techniques we have been going over very well. We then moved on to the critical reading section, running through the two remaining types of passages (humanities and prose fiction). She did great on most of those problems and where she had trouble we talked about strategies for confronting those problems on the test. We finished with a full run-through of test tips and some general advice for her test this Saturday. I think she is going to do great this weekend and I have loved working with her thus far!"
"The student and I were able to cover a little of each test section. He did well in all sections, and had good timing in the math section. If he continues the success he has shown me during our sessions, he will perform well on the ACT test."
"Today was her and my last session before she takes the ACT on Saturday. We spent our time reviewing general strategies and working on writing and reading. She does very well on all of the English-based sections and her essays have gotten stronger and stronger. I was also surprised and impressed when she finished all of the reading questions with 7 minutes to spare. As long as she remembers to read the math and science questions closely and carefully, I'm sure she will do very well on her test."
"With her first ACT coming up this Saturday, she choose to focus on the science section today. So we took the time for her to take a practice science section. We talked about different approaches and thinking of the science section like a reading section with charts and graphs."
"Focused exclusively on math today, because we want the student's score to jump the most on this one. She learns quickly so we are making good progress; next session we will go over our notes and make sure she has certain problems down 100%."
"We reviewed the assigned homework together and I was impressed by his ability to retain a lot of the information that we went over in our previous session. During our session, I taught him some new grammatical rules. I tried to make sure that he fully understood one concept before moving on to the next. For homework, I assigned him to do a practice grammar section and to indicate the rules needed to reach the correct answer. I am confident that he will do his homework assignment this time."
"He and I worked on the critical reading passage questions. We started out by going over assigned practice problems to identify errors. While doing so, we discussed strategies to recognize what the question is asking, what "best" means in the context of the question, how to refer to selectively referenced lines in the questions, and signals to narrow/eliminate answers. His success rate was about 50 percent from the prerecorded answers. After that first hour, we spent the second hour doing a passage reading he had not previously completed. The goal was for him to apply what he had just learned. His success rate was markedly improved to around 80 percent."
"He and I met for our first session of SAT tutoring. In this session, I focused on assessing his current level. He is already scoring highly on the test, having scored 2000 the last time he took the test. In doing practice sessions it is clear he is very smart, and he understood my explanations very quickly. Because he is advanced, we will focus more on practicing for the test and less on learning new concepts."
"The student and I met for the first time in a very long time. We did a refresher for the ACT this weekend. We worked on some general comma usage, some general math (such as quadratics and equations of lines), and how to approach a science passage."
