Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I met today at the bookstore to continue working on our math studies. I can really tell that she is grasping concepts more and more. She recognizes different types of problems and how to work them out. It's a big step up from a couple weeks ago. I'm proud of her!"
"In our final session, the student and I focused on testing strategy for his HSTP exam. We went over a number of sample questions, focusing on language arts. We talked about the pacing of the exam, and his own speed, as well as strategies to do well on the test, either on the 8th or the 22nd. This was his and my final session - I'm confident he'll pass the exam."
"Organic chemistry: Lewis acid and base reactions and mechanisms, alkane nomenclature and simple configurations. We also discussed some tools that might benefit the student such as a chemistry model kit. We made good progress in nomenclature and acid base mechanisms and basic concepts, and while she seemed hesitant she did have a good understanding of simple alkane 3D configurations."
"The student and I reviewed his finance essays. The topics covered were the pros and cons of investing in rental property, the best way to shop for a mortgage, the best way to analyze a good faith estimate, and important rules of personal finance."
"I gave the student the prompt "Compare the presence of old people in two works you have studied," and timed him for completing body paragraphs. After he completed the body paragraphs, I had him read his work aloud to look for mistakes. Then, we practiced writing introductory and conclusion paragraphs."
"The student and I had the final session before the assessment. She had completed a practice test from the books (which she found easy) and from the test-prep book (which she found more difficult). We reviewed some problems she found difficult and covered test-taking strategies. The student has a great memory, which will serve her well in the test. It was such a pleasure working with her; she's such a bright, mature girl. I hope we will have another opportunity to work together during the year."
"We went over a homework assignment, during which we reviewed the basic rules of person- and perfect-tense endings; stressed the importance of keeping up with the material; covered the present tense of the irregular verbs "volo," "nolo," and "possum," including strategies that make it possible to avoid having to memorize the present-tense charts of "nolo" and "possum" separately; and worked on an upcoming translation/verb assignment involving those irregular verbs and infinitives."
"Today the student and I reviewed for the math section and went over some areas where she was rusty, then did a practice timed section. She did quite well - if she maintained that pace through 3 sections she would end up with a 770. We did the same for reading and was on pace for a 690. We then reviewed roots of words from Greek and Latin."
"The student and I continued to review her essay. We worked on creating an outline and a rough draft. I think the session was very useful to her, we were able to talk through a lot of points, and she made some changes to the outline based on our discussions."
"The session was a Math session where the students were provided with a worksheet that comprises various types of questions, namely: additions, subtractions, multiplications and divisions. Overall, it was a satisfactory lesson."
"Today we covered lesson 42 which covered volume. There were also simplification problems and word problems. The student did much better on the multiplication of binomials today."
"We worked on her math homework which focused on reducing fractions. Also, she did her English worksheet reviewing sentence types from yesterday and learning how to write a complex predicate in sentences."
