Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We worked through Student 1's homework, discussing polynomials and finding roots. I also worked briefly with Student 2, discussing permutations and combinations as well as determining the number of outcomes."
"The student and I continued working through AP practice tests tonight. She still struggled with some problems that required a more creative approach to derivatives and integrals, but she quickly caught on after my explanations. Our pacing tonight was a lot stronger than last week, too. Overall, I think she is in good shape for her AP exam."
"For this session, we started with a general review of topics from Algebra II including exponents, roots, and absolute value. Then we went on to study for the student's test on Monday. We worked through the unit circle, solving triangles, coterminal angles, and converting radians to degrees etc. For homework, I suggested more practice before the test, and 20 questions in the review book."
"Today the student and I covered over irrational and rational numbers, proportional word problems, scientific notation, and Pythagorean theorem. He did great until we reached the process of a^2+b^2=c^2. After review, he has better understanding on the concept of how the numbers are being replaced with the letters without removing the square."
"The student and I met today to prepare for her quiz this week in math and for her to finish her two worksheets. She is working on solving rational expression equations and cross-multiplying as well as factoring. She gets the hang of the introductory problems. She had a better grasp of the homework. We reviewed some of the second worksheet, which was simpler but did require some manipulation with common denominators of rational expressions."
"Today's session with the student went incredibly well. He prepared for his upcoming exam retake and he did amazingly well. He is getting down the equations and remembering them as well as how to apply them. I believe that when he takes his exam this week he will get a very good grade, which will help him boost his confidence and help him overall. He has extra practice problems from his teacher. I am excited to see how he does on his exam."
"The student had her homework assignment available. We started from the beginning of Chapter 11 that involved arithmetic and geometric sequences. She was a little confused in the beginning, but she began to remember. She informed me that she already created her index card with the formulas that contain the sum of sequences, convergence, divergence, and the formula for arithmetic and geometric sequences. She did well and she was able to complete the review. I requested that she complete the review assignment again to make sure she is ready for her test tomorrow."
"For this session, as usual, we reviewed some of the previous material to make sure the student has a solid base. We reviewed conjugates, factoring polynomials, word problems, and parent functions. In addition, we also discussed organization skills and good study habits. We also reviewed composition functions, because the student mentioned that he has an upcoming test. Next session, I plan on covering them again as well as completing the square."
"We covered infinite series, in particular how to determine if they converge and how to compute the Taylor series approximation of a function. We went over all the tests for convergence and when to use each, as well as known convergent and divergent series. There is a lot to remember on this topic so it would be a good idea to do more practice problems involving each test before the exam. The student should also practice computing Taylor series and memorize the four known series so he can use those on the test."
"The student and I reviewed range, median, mode, and mean and discussed how to solve problems related to those four. We also reviewed the stem and leaf plot and why it is useful. We also reviewed how to build and read a box plot (box and whiskers) with her. She does have a flair for numbers which I hope will continue to grow."
"Yesterday the student worked on exercises regarding matrices, a subject that she has recently started. Because she had already finished with her homework we went ahead, studied a new section, and practiced exercises of those sections. Matrix is a cool subject and with everything that she has already covered in her course, it is not surprising that she is doing well on her homework. The only thing she needs to be careful with is with signs. Other than that, she is doing great and I am very proud of her."
"This week the student and I worked some more on probability and ratios. I noticed that he's slowly but surely getting better and grasping the concepts involved, and this is a positive sign which means he is benefiting from our tutorial sessions!"
