Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I practiced difficult math problems. She had gotten better with practice and continues to improve. She is seeing the patterns in the types of questions that are asked in the math section. We ended the session with a review of the essay section. She is to complete an essay for homework."
"Today we began with an overview of the ACT, since this will be her first experience with the test. We went over the format, subjects tested, and general strategies. I then had her complete diagnostic tests in English and Math. She will complete the Reading and Science on her own so we can get an idea of what her baseline scores are."
"During this session, we worked on the reading and science sections once again. I think that the student is gaining more and more confidence, which bodes well for when she takes the actual exam. The more confident she is with the practice material, the better the chances are that she won't allow nerves to get to her when she is taking the real thing and her score will stay on par with most of the practice tests. She has been scoring in the low to mid 30s on most all of the practice sections, which is well within her ideal score range. We worked on practice prose and humanities reading passages, as well as a physics based science passage."
"We worked on math today, and concentrated on the basic categories of ACT math, percents, and right triangle geometry. The student took a practice test of the English section and scored a 29; 2 points higher than his previous score!"
"Today was our last session! She had taken quite a few tests in the time since we last met, and said that she was feeling faster and more comfortable. We spent most of our time reviewing the English section, where she did really well on the grammatical questions. She should remember to look for answers that are more specific and get rid of redundant options. We also worked on some math and reading. If she feels pressured for time on the reading section, I recommend simply reading the first and last sentences of paragraphs (other than in the prose section, which she did well on anyway). I wish her best of luck on her test!"
"During yesterday's session, the student completed one full Reading test. She finished well within the time limit. She scored a 21. She has scored as high as a 28 on this section on previous tests. We discussed all of the correct answers and decided to focus our last lesson on going through another full Reading test. She has done well consistently on the English sections: 27, 28, 25. The structure and organization of her writing sample was much stronger. For homework, she will complete one full Reading section, one full English section, and write one essay."
"Today we covered the most commonly tested rules on the English section. We also spent a little time drilling for the science section. No concerns to report. The student seems to be making progress and has even been completing extra studying independently in addition to his homework. The plan is for him to complete English, science, and reading sections of practice tests from his book for homework."
"The student and I worked on the English section of the ACT today. We covered topics like correct punctuation usage, who vs. whom, and identifying parts of speech based on word endings. We also went over her math homework for a bit. She seemed to have a good handle on it all. Good job!"
"We began using online tests for practice because the more exposure the better for the exam. We worked on Science and English so that we brushed up on everything due to the focus on Math. We are hoping to meet two more times prior to her ACT next weekend."
"We covered ACT English concepts today. I had the student take a couple of practice tests and we covered the questions he got wrong along with the concepts relative to that question. I gave him some more practice tests to go over before our next session."
"Great first session with the student today. Worked on Reading and English for the assessment. He took a little extra time on them and got 8 and 9 out of 10 on them and said he felt good about it. I had him do an English diagnostic test and left him with work to practice Reading flashcards and study assessment punctuation from a review page I gave him. Will focus more on English in next session."
"During this session, we focused on the reading section. We covered strategies for reading the passage strategically (including reading for topic, scope, and purpose). Towards the end of the session, we continued our coverage of the math section by focusing on more to cover. I recommended that the student practice a full timed reading section in order to have a better experience on test day."
