Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I continued our work on SAT Math, focusing on geometry and functions. One problem is especially holding him back: he sometimes gets intimidated by unusual problems or problems that demand creative solutions, even though they may not be that hard to decipher. If the student can learn to control his intimidation, I think he's going to do much better."
"In this session, the student and I did some review. She was instructed to write one essay we had planned for homework. She was also given another essay to plan and write for homework. We also worked on the critical reading section, focusing most of our energy on the vocabulary questions and the extended passage questions. She was left with one practice test's critical reading sections (3) for homework. I will attempt to find an online tool/game that will help the student practice her vocabulary words so she is more comfortable with these questions."
"The student completed most of a practice exam since our last meeting. We reviewed her errors on the test. Overall, she is making great progress and is improving her scores on the sections. She will continue with practice work before our next session."
"The student and I have mostly focused on math. We reviewed many elementary formulas and worked on memorization of these, in preparation for the exam (slope, setting up a ratio, etc.) He is definitely a bright kid and I think he is starting to see the methodology behind the exam."
"This is our first session together. The student is most concerned with the physics exam, so we focused on that subject for today. To assess his knowledge, we worked on a diagnostic exam. He is a dedicated worker and picks up on concepts quickly. We worked on 1-D motion, reviewing equations with him and what they were used for. We have set up an equation sheet for him to use to review key equations. We also covered vectors and their applications to physics."
"Today we covered conic sections including ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas. We briefly discussed rotation of conic graphs and practiced many problems on the conic graphs and equations. The student was very familiar with these topics. We also introduced the topic of the three dimensional Cartesian coordinate system. She picked up this material very quickly as well. She understands all the underlying concepts extremely thoroughly and will be very successful in her precalculus course."
"At this first session, I discussed with the student what her goals are for tutoring. I looked at her scores from the last time she took the college prep exam, including the breakdown by subject, and ascertained that the sections we will work on are reading (especially answering questions about passages) and the essay, as well as some of the multiple choice portion of the writing. We did some reading practice questions, and I saw that she needs to work on vocabulary and understanding complex/formal sentence structures. Her comprehension is good, and her understanding of grammar/correcting sentence errors is fairly good. We also began discussing strategies for the essay. We worked on reading the questions about the passage first, then going back and reading the passage with the questions in mind. This improved her ability to answer the questions."
"It was a great first session with the student! We focused on the English section today. We discussed strategies, such as reading the whole passage first, determining the focus and mood, and summarizing passages. and sentences. I have asked her to spend some time reading more and to look at the grammar in her English class books."
"Today the student and I corrected her practice test together. Her reading comprehension has improved significantly, and her essay writing is coming far more naturally. We continue to work on grammar rules and math, so we will be covering those more heavily. We did not finish correcting the test but we will next session. In the meantime I assigned some more reading exercises and vocab, and to attempt the math section without test conditions."
"The student and I met for the first time. We decided that we will focus exclusively on reading and math. In the session, we worked through a variety of problems, and she proved very adept at working through all types of problems. She shows a lot of potential. I will follow up with her by email to give her some problems to work on before we meet again."
"We reviewed the student's vocabulary and context clue exercises. She also began a full critical reading and writing practice test that we review and discuss section by section, focusing on her thought process, test strategy, and concept review. I left her with her continuing vocabulary and context clue exercises."
"Today we took a Writing diagnostic test, and I made a note of the subtopics the student needs to work on. We also discussed strategy for the Error-Identification and the Sentence-Correction parts of the Writing Section. She really progressed with pronouns. No concerns."
