Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student has a geometry test tomorrow, so he brought his review sheet covering all the topics on the test. The material dealt with perimeter/area of polygons and circles and also using ratios to find the missing portion. The review included details such as the apothem, radius, and diameter. Once the student got the hang of how to figure out the missing portion, he did great answering the questions. He definitely has the potential to do well in the class."
"We covered more of the diagnostics test. Still works hard during the session, but I would like to see some more work done on his own time and I plan on helping him set some goals to prepare him for the test. He is very responsive and listens well and I hope to instill more confidence in him."
"The student needed help with related rates problems. These are perhaps the most difficult problems she will face this year. She had very little understanding when we started the work. However, I believe that she began to understand the basics of the problems when we were finished."
"Today I met with Student1 and Student 2. Student 1 and I discussed how to solve systems of equations. We also discussed how to solve linear programming problems and how to graph the feasibility region. Student 1 seemed to understand a little better by the end of our session. Student 2 and I discussed solving inequalities and graphing them. At the end of the session, he seemed to understand all that we discussed."
"We began this session with a new concept: nouns! We talked about the concept of a noun and she practiced identifying and spelling words that are nouns. Then we talked about the difference between a regular (singular) noun and a plural noun, and we practiced classifying different words as plural or singular nouns. Then we worked on some mixed math review and some calendar work. We finished by talking more about "oo"/"ue" words and identifying the long "o" sound and rhymes."
"This session began by reviewing the general framework for completing the essay. The remainder of the session was spent reviewing math practice problems, including math word problems. The session today went very well!"
"The student and I did math and science. For math, we went over comparing fractions and word problems involving average. Since we finished with math, we focused on her science and geology. We worked on a vocabulary sheet and cross word puzzle with no word bank."
"The student and I made great progress today. We finished up the respiration packet by reviewing the muscles associated with breathing and the pleura surrounding the lungs. We then moved on to the kidney packet. I used a video to begin discussing the kidney and it's function. The kidney is generally a bit tricky to understand because it is hard to keep straight which part of the anatomy eventually leads out of the body and which parts will lead back to body tissue. I had the student draw a picture of a nephron and we labeled the parts together. We reviewed the juxtaglomerular apparatus and it's blood pressure measuring function as well as the two types of cells that are involved in measuring blood pressure. We reviewed the filtration barrier, the renal corpuscle, and the functions of the proximal tubule, loop of Henle and distal convoluted tubule. We didn't finish the entire packet today but we made really good progress discussing the main components of the nephron."
"For this session I worked with the student who is in 7th grade. From my assessment, he seems to be on track with understanding math and science concepts. He had good note taking, organization skills as well as (from what he told me) study skills. I advised the family to have a meeting with the teachers to go over any missed assignments/homework and to look over past quizzes to determine where the lower grades are coming from."
"The student and I completed a science test. We also did a few math questions, and then we went over tips for the writing test. She also made flash cards for punctuation rules, etc. Then we worked on some English questions."
"The student completed most of the full-length practice exam during this session. The student finished Section 3, Reading Comprehension with a score of 37 out of a possible 40 points. She has surpassed her goal in this section. The student then completed one half of the Mathematics Achievement section of the test. This is the most challenging section of the test for her, which we will practice next week. I also assigned a time management exercise for math problems."
"The student and I went over the homework he had been assigned concerning parallelograms. Important concepts that were covered included the relationships between sides, angles, and diagonals in parallelograms. Also, we reviewed the study guide for his upcoming test on Wednesday. Other problems we discussed concerned interior and exterior angles of regular polygons."
