Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Today we went over mostly ellipses and the student completed her homework assignment. She did well with this. We worked on how to change the center in the equations. Afterwards, we discussed parabolas and how to find the directrix and focus on vertical and horizontal parabolas."
"In this afternoon's session, the student and I worked through his chapter 6 & 7 test review packet. The focus was solving linear and nonlinear systems of equations by using substitution, elimination, and matrices (by hand and by using a calculator). He was very comfortable solving the systems using substitution and elimination, but made a few algebraic errors with errant negative signs when solving the systems of equations using matrices by hand. We worked through a few of those, and then moved on to solving them using a calculator, where he was much more at ease (and successful!). Later this evening, he will work more on his own with solving algebraically using Gaussian and GaussJordan elimination methods to better prepare for his test later this week. We will meet again tomorrow night to finish working through the study guide."
"We covered a review of differentiation and integration. We reviewed the chain rule. We also spent a lot of time on usubstitution in order to evaluate integrals involving the inverse trigonometric functions. We worked on old AP free response questions that required the analysis of the first and second derivatives of a function. We also spent a little time at the end on differential equations and slope fields."
"Topics covered dealt with solving and simplifying functions and inverse functions using tables, charts, graphs, and equations. Domain and range problems were also discussed, and a portion of the test review packet was completed. We practiced figuring out how to start the different types of problems and apply the concepts. Overall, the student gained a better understanding of how to work with functions and gained more practice with the topics."
"I went over simplification of trigonometric expressions and trigonometric identity proofs, and had the student do 10 problems on the subject. At first he was intimidated by the material, but as I broke it down into simpler steps, he seemed to understand the concepts. I also did 2 word problems with him, from the book, so that he could get used to interpreting the word problems better. Overall, he did well on those."
"The student and I did more work on calculating the volumes of solids of revolution. He has the basics down well, which is excellent to see. We also discussed what he can do to adequately prepare for his next test, and what kinds of topics he needs to review in preparation for the test."
"Today, the student and I reviewed for his test tomorrow on exponential and logarithmic functions with extra practice graphing logarithms, expanding and condensing logarithms, and simplifying exponential expressions. He showed significant improvement on each of these skills, which left me confident that he will do well on the test."
"Yesterday's session was dedicated to making sure that the student understood some statistics, primarily chi square tests, and the concept of correlation. Once she understood the statistics material, we proceeded to going over her homework pertaining to evolution.
The majority of our time was to make sure that she understood all of the concepts that are found in evolution, including speciation, evolutionary mechanisms, and evidence for evolution. We managed to go over a great majority of the material in the evolution chapters, and I trust she is well prepared to answer those questions on her final exam."

"We specifically covered chapter 7 which was on sample variability. After the lesson, we did her homework problems in her book. The student understood the concepts when I explained it. Overall, the session was excellent."
"Today we went over hypothesis testing using sample means and confidence intervals. We discussed null vs. alternative hypotheses, the difference between standard deviation and sample standard deviation, and onetailed vs. twotailed tests. Lastly, we went over how to compute pvalues, and how to determine the critical z value for any given alpha."
"The student is working to get ready for her comprehensive last exam. She told me it will be over identifying which statistical test to use in a situation and interpreting results. I brought with me a list of all the tests with explanations, different examples of studies, and results. We went over the majority of the tests, and I gave her examples of studies that she needed to pick out the right test. She did fairly well with this. We talked about looking for keywords that would help make a choice. Also, we worked on questions along with going over some of her older tests and quizzes."
"During this session we covered the logic and use of the independent samples Ttest. Suggested extra practice to understand the relationship of type I and type II error, practice obtaining the difference row in Sata output using the t test formulas. I have no concerns."
