Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"We went over about a chapter and a half for the midterm. The student needed a little reminder how to deal with some of the vector problems but we went over what we needed to again and he remembered it pretty quickly. It was a good session."
"Today the student and I studied more factoring, and we started working on radical expressions. The student does a great job factoring trinomials. We talked about a pattern to follow to recognize how to factor binomials and polynomials with 4 terms."
"Went over new material for class, focusing on a new worksheet he had received to cover comparative advantage vs absolute advantage and how it leads into trade. Worked on a step by step process into figuring out an accepted trade ratio for a 2 good 2 country model and discussed the ramifications of trade and the PPF vs the TPF."
"We spent the first half of the session discussing what the student has done to date to prepare for his MCAT. We discussed how he felt about the test course, what he thinks are his weak areas with respect to content (physics and general chemistry), and how we would want to schedule things going forward - 3 weeks general chemistry and physics content review, 2 weeks biology and organic chemistry content review, longitudinal verbal practice, and 3 weeks of full-length, AAMC practice tests. We spent the latter part of the session starting physics review, mostly discussing kinematics. He seemed to recall some aspects of kinematics as we reviewed it, but admitted he needed to memorize equations and trig relationships. Finally, I gave him homework for next time, if he decides the online conference format will work for him."
"The student and I continued work on the English and reading portions of the exam. She should take her practice exam this weekend, and we will continue to develop strategies for the reading and English sections further next week."
"I assigned her math problems and a comprehension session to complete. She was able to answer most of the questions with ease. The problems she had issue with, we went over in detail. I am starting to assign her timed homework in order to get her more test ready."
"The student and I met and worked through some of the factoring problems she was having trouble with. We are going to have to work through and develop a set of rules for her to use to evaluate each one as a certain type of problem so she will solve in this certain way until it becomes second nature."
"The student is retaking the SAT in January, and is hoping to score at least a 32 or 33. The Physical Science sections tends to be the strongest. We first went over general test taking strategies and time management skills for each of the 3 sections. We then worked through some practice verbal passages, going through the questions in detail and getting a feel for how she typically works through the section. We plan on going over a practice test next session, along with some organic chemistry concepts."
"The student and I first talked about how we could rearrange her schedule so that we could fit all of her content review passages in before her first practice exam in October. She has been having trouble balancing school and MCAT studying, but said that she will have more time to dedicate to MCAT since she just finished her first round of mid-terms. We then spent the rest of the time on Verbal. I had her complete a practice passage and questions while thinking out loud so that I could get a better sense of how she is utilizing the strategies that we have talked about over the past few weeks. We talked about things that she did well and things that she could improve upon when approaching future passages."
"The student and I conducted a basic chemistry review. We discussed periodic trends, electron configurations, polarity, molecular geometry, and the ideal gas law. I assigned her reading and homework for next week."
"We covered Projectile motion and acceleration, displacement, and velocity. We went over the chapter. She has the next chapter to go over in Physics. No concerns."
"The student told me what she thought about the practice test I assigned her last week for homework. Then I reviewed the topic of Electrostatics which took up the majority of the session. She is a very quick learner and seems to pick up the material easily. For homework, I am assigning her some practice questions relating to electrostatics to check her understanding."
