Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Tonight I introduced girl/boy and big/little in French. The student excels with the colors and numbers (tonight we counted to 16). He seems to remember most of the vocabulary thus far and can state a couple of complete sentences as well as correctly answer some questions in French. For the latter half of the session, we worked on identifying the letters of the alphabet in English. I showed him the flashcard of the given letter then asked him to identify it and write it. If he could not identify it, I told him the letter and asked him to say it aloud and write it on the white wipe off board. He worked hard tonight."
"Reviewed and worked through three work modules of student's online Spanish Class. Worked on homework assignments, quizzes and voice notes. We got ahead in the class for due dates. Student did well and is becoming more comfortable speaking Spanish."
"Today the student and I went over a lengthy reading passage in her textbook, reading the passage for details and new vocabulary. The student was careful to pay attention to any keywords that she did not know, and used the dictionary to clarify any questions. We also answered the comprehension questions that accompanied the passage in the book. She wrote out the answers in complete sentences, being careful to use correct verb tenses, vocab, singular/plural, and subject-verb agreement. At the end of our session, we briefly reviewed vocabulary lists and practiced pronunciation."
"Good tutoring session with the student - she just got back her Spanish exam and got an 88.33% on it which is good, but we are still shooting for the A range. A couple simple mistakes but the student knows her stuff. Also went over a recent Science quiz where the student got a 91.66%. We went over the couple mistake areas on each subject and talked about how to approach them in the future. Also, suggested the student watch with Dad (or nanny) some overly-dramatic Spanish telenovelas with closed captioning because they are sometimes effective means to learning....and fun and entertaining."
"During the last session with the student, we covered the optics section of the test's physics syllabus. He worked on all the discrete question for this section and also did the extra problems in that were assigned previously to reinforce the concepts of electricity and stoichiometry. The student was assigned more high yield questions for this sessions and will also be doing a thorough review of the biology and organic chemistry sections of the test before his next test practice test."
"Last night the student and I worked on Calculus problems to study for the AP Calculus AB exam on May 9th. We discussed finding volumes of surfaces of revolution and the specific methods used to find the volume. I tried to give her more intuition as to why the formulas for the disk method and the washer method are what they are. I believe that she understands the material and I am confident in her ability to perform on the test. I am working on building her intuition for the subject so she can understand the formulas rather than memorize them."
"The student and I worked on both z-scoring of statistical data and the creation of histograms and bins from a large data set. He stated he felt much more comfortable with it after a few practice rounds and we easily got through his homework."
"We covered select passages from the student's textbook, along with Verbal passages and science passages. Science concepts included electromagnetism, capacitors, and carbohydrates. She will go over self assessments in the meantime, which we will cover in the next session."
"This was our first session, so we talked about the student's history with the exam and her previous attempts. She has been working on content, but will need help with strategies and test-taking tips. She will focus on doing practice problems to help her guide her content review going forward. We did several practice problems together from her most recent practice test, reviewing content and strategies to answer questions faster and more easily. She will do 20 practice questions each day, and I will begin sending her articles to review for next week."
"We covered: -Circuits- practice applying Kirchhoff's laws--voltage drops across parallel resistors are the same, V=iR, think of voltage as similar to gravitational potential energy. -Optics- remember that "I (eye) am positive that real is inverted". -pH - Henderson-Hasselbach equation is useful for buffers, practice manipulating logs, especially to convert back and forth between pH and [H+]. Keep up good work on taking section tests/going through practice problems throughout the week, and start taking one full-length exam each weekend!"
"Today we continued Physics from the student's review book. She is learning to work with units and laying out the force diagrams of the problems. She will take a practice test soon and continue to work independently on these problems."
"Today we covered the first three chapters of chemistry review. We clarified concepts like dipole moments (good review of vector addition). Next session we plan to go over the first three chapters in the organic chemistry review notes."
