Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"Student and I spent the majority of the time on the English section of his most recent practice test. We identified that he could use some more review on combining dependent and independent clauses, as well as conductive adverbs. We spent the last several minutes on some math problems."
"We prepared for the subject test today by working through a practice test in the test prep booklet. We did twenty questions together and I modeled my approach to answering the questions. the student has trouble with pacing, so I showed her how to save time by making sure she understands the question first before moving on to the answers, which saves her from having to go back and reread the questions and the answers over again. I then let her do 30 questions on her own. She scored the equivalent of a 660 on the test, which is already a great improvement over her 500 range score from last week."
"We started off by going through missed problems in the student's diagnostic exam. He did very well, scoring a 27 - a great start. With continued practice, he can certainly shoot up even higher. With the missed problems, he quickly recognized that the problems weren't as difficult as he initially made them out to be. The rest of the time was spent going through practice writing and science sections, along with more advanced math problems. I recommended that he do another practice exam on his own."
"I went over practice test with students questions by questions to help students prepare the best strategy on how to tackle problem. I recommended extra practice consisting of test materials from the book, best one test per day."
"I believe he has shown me in the past two sessions that he is capable of performing at a high level (high 20's) on that section of the test. I fully expect significant improvements. For homework, I assigned 20 mathematics and 1 science passage. Looking forward to Friday's session."
"Today the student and I went over the science section and worked on speeding up her time on the reading section. We worked on reading graphs faster and keeping her place on both the question and the graph in order to use her time more efficiently in science. When I left, she had sped up her reading section from 9 minutes per passage to at most 8 minutes per section. She also had an easier time understanding the figures on the science section. I didn't leave her with any extra practice other than suggesting she could time herself reading."
"In this session, we went over the homework completed by the student since our last session and continued our practice, reviewing one section of Reading and one section of Science questions. Since our last meeting, she improved her scores considerably. She has been taking more time to read the questions carefully and this has enabled her to do much better. As an area of improvement, she should focus on training herself to be thinking carefully for longer and longer periods of time, as the mistakes that she is now making are small errors caused by slips of concentration. As preparation for next time, I assigned more outside reading and requested that she do at least one section of Reading or Science questions each day until our next session. I have no concern from this session and feel she is in a good position to do well on June 14."
" - Meeting 6/1 - We went over SAT HW, then began focusing on ACT and the reading section. - I taught the student to look quickly at the questions to familiarize himself with the topics, then go through the reading and answer the questions as he reads along. - This seemed to help with timing, though we still need to work on understanding the passages."
"The student did extremely well on his assigned practice Math and Science work, only missing a couple questions in total. We reviewed those issues and did some more ACT Math and Science practice together, with his only serious struggle arising from a Science passage with an egregious typo in it that was confusing. We also discussed a few of the Writing prompts to help get his thoughts moving this morning."
"I had the student complete a timed science section when I arrived. We then went over the questions she got wrong and why. We then went through another two passages of a different science section that focused particularly on comparing charts and graphs. We finished the session with 30 questions from a math section that tested her knowledge of plane geometry and trig."
"I worked with the student on science this time. She had not really worked in that section, so I wanted her to get a feel for the types of questions and the timing that goes into them. She seemed to do okay, but had some trouble with the reading passage and with her time. We will have to work on that during our other sessions."
"We continued to work on the ACT Reading. I shared some tips specific to Reading. We worked through two passages together and then the student completed a practice Reading test. She is struggling with getting through the reading especially if it is on a topic she doesn't enjoy. One of the strategies that she is going to practice is quickly skimming the questions and passage, then digging deeper by using line references and key words in the questions. She is going to complete another Reading practice test under test conditions before we meet again."
