"We concentrated on phonics today and he knows sounds and combinations well. He's using the picture as context instead of sounding out the words. This means that in addition to reading, we will be playing many more word games that make him sound out and recognize combinations of letters without being able to guess. This works well because when he's playing he doesn't realize he's working. He does a fantastic job with reading and phonics. We also worked on writing. He did a great job today."
"Today, we started with going through the upper and lower case letters. The student got all but 4 right on the first try. This is a huge improvement, especially with the lower case letters! We then practiced her first 25 sight words. She beat her score of 10 from last week with a score of 11 today. Next, we played a phonics game on matching words with letter sounds. After this, we started reading 4 simple sentences. She was able to read 2/4 sentences on her own by the end of class. We also started talking about -at words. We made a list of all the words that end in -at that we could think of, and then the student read them to me with my help. Lastly, we read "Splish, Splash, Splat!""
"This was a great session. The student did his homework. We've been working on both analytical thinking and predictive thinking, both of which he's had difficulty with in the past. He's getting more comfortable with both. He is more open to thinking about why things happen ("Why does the character act this way?"). His predictive ability is getting better."
