Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I had an emergency session this day because she had a test coming up that her teachers did not inform her of. She had a very lengthy packet to finish which involved shifting between tables graphs and equations of various forms including standard, vertex and factored. At the beginning she had some trouble remembering tactics for solving these problems including remembering vertex equations. After some practice she did quite well with these problems. She really understood the meaning of the graph by explaining each answer she gave. It was very impressive to see her intuitively grasp the symmetry of the graphs."
"The student did well today. We went over functions: parabolas, linear fns, and absolute value functions. We talked about two methods for graphing the functions, the first is plot points and the second is to understand the general shape of the graph then look at the equation to see what transformations are made. I hope that he can use these two recursively so that he lands at the correct answer every time, because he will have two methods of solving each problem instead of just one."
"We used the session to review rounding and multiplying 2-digit numbers. The student understands the rules for rounding very well and does well when using a number line, but in practice on-the-fly he was struggling with rounding down. We did an activity pretending we were frogs leaping from lily pads with possible answers so that he could see when he was passing the closest hundredth. We then did some practice from an online worksheet. He did better after some practice. He even scored a 95 percent on the online game we played after. In math, he completed 6 2-digit multiplication problems in 5 mins."
"The student just started working on a new unit on Circles, so we worked on some practice problems naming the different properties of circles and identifying them on diagrams. We also worked on problems with tangent lines and inscribed quadrilaterals. Finally, we worked on a couple proofs regarding circles."
"I explained to him how to find surface area. I helped him start his second essay for the application."
"We worked on radians today. It was a little foreign to her, but she was able to convert from degrees to radians and back with ease."
