Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I did several problems in a sample Algebra 1 exam to assess her level in Algebra 1 and her preparedness to move forward in Analytic Geometry. These problems spanned all of the different concepts within Algebra 1, but we spent a majority of our time reviewing how to simplify expressions and solve equations for an unknown. I gave her about 15 problems to complete before we meet next time. I think with a bit of work over a few weeks, she will be able to gain confidence with all topics of Algebra 1 so that she can apply them toward the material in her Analytic Geometry class."
"We reviewed Algebra and Biology. We went over the student's homework for this week, which focused on step-wise functions, absolute value functions, and solving for functions through graphs. We also reviewed Biology concepts, including prokaryotic cell traits, ions, and balancing chemical reactions."
"We discussed the student's homework problems, which covered solving inequalities. She did well. We also worked on reviewing a type of word problem that she has found challenging. She improved a lot after several practice questions. Again, we will review this type of problem during our next session so it is fresh for the test next week."
"Today, we went over quadratic functions again. The student felt much more comfortable with the topic in class and in today's session. She remembers the formulas and tools to do related problems, but she gets confused when to use them. We did practice problems, and she now understands how to get the answers. She just needs to be sure she is always answering the right question. I believe that her understanding of each piece will help her place them with the right tools. So far she has learned about axis of symmetry, y-intercept, and vertex of quadratic functions. I have quizzed her verbally on the tool to use for each concept and the reasoning behind it. She should be studying by quizzing herself until our next session."
"Today, we discussed the student's homework, which was based on several types of linear equations. Specifically, we covered standard form of linear equations, x and y intercepts, and word problems. In the end, we also looked into graphing linear equations using a free android app. Both slope-intercept form and point-intercept forms were plotted. The students enjoyed graphical interpretation of algebraic formulas and enjoyed graphing these. They are proficient and ahead of the class on this topic."
"Concepts covered: Pythagorean theorem, solving for x, multiple variables, sorting terms, negative number review, squared number properties, and test taking strategies. The student's attitude was much more positive after some explanation of underlying principles. She indicates a strong willingness to learn concepts and continues to be an excellent tutoring student. Working through problems together after theory explanation is showing very positive results."
