Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This session we did several practice test sections in math and writing. The student understood most of the things he did wrong and I hope he will improve for the SAT on Saturday. This will be his last session at least until his scores arrive."
"During our last session together prior to her June SAT, the student worked on critical reading and writing. I selected two very difficult critical reading sections from the perspective of challenging vocabulary. Because the sentence completion questions were more challenging than they have been normally, she found them particularly challenging and left more than a few unanswered. As we reviewed the questions she either answered incorrectly or skipped, we defined words in not only the question stem and correct answer choice but also in the incorrect answer choices. On the passage-based reading questions, She seemed more comfortable. Similarly, on the writing section, she also seemed very comfortable. During our last session, she had struggled a bit with the writing section, which seemed anomalous then, and today's performance seemed to indicate just that. She answered even the more challenging questions correctly, and she performed very well overall on this section. With the test on Saturday, I expect that she will do at least marginally better on the verbal sections, though this will also be dependent on her continuing the vocabulary practice at home as well."
"The student and I spent our last session reviewing all areas of the SAT. We began by addressing the questions she had stemming from the practice sections she had completed. Most of these questions were math-based, so we spent extra time reviewing the approaches to various math problem types, focusing heavily on proportion, function, distance, system of equation, and word problems. Word problems are occasionally problematic for the student, but when she takes them sentence by sentence, and translates the phrases into mathematical expressions, she has no problem logically working through the questions and finding the correct answers. She seems most confident approaching critical reading passages, and rightly so. She has gotten comfortable locating key words and eliminating incorrect answer options. I will email her some last minute tips and reminders. She has the knowledge and skill set to succeed. She has been a pleasure to work with and I wish her nothing but the absolute best. I know that she has an incredibly bright future ahead of her."
