Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student had requested that we spend the session going through her teacher's study guide for the upcoming test on evolution, so we simply went through the list of points provided, talking at least briefly about each one, and elaborating as necessary. In particular, we covered the general concepts of evolution, Origin of Species, population genetics and Hardy-Weinberg frequencies, evolutionary factors (mutation, natural selection, sexual selection, genetic drift, gene flow); we also talked about phylogenetics, rooted vs. unrooted trees, parsimony method, outgroup criterion, and did a handful of exercise cladograms and example calculations of allele / genotype frequencies."
"Today was dedicated to getting the student prepared for her upcoming Biology final. The student was given an outline of the subjects being covered in the exam, and so we used that as our schedule for the session. As we went through each chapter, the student asked for clarifications on certain details, and I made sure to indicate which slides would be more helpful than others."
"We began with a review of genetics, specifically the vocabulary on the study guide. Then we covered the steps of the scientific method and the chemistry of life vocabulary. I would like to make notecards for the material so that the student will study effectively for his final exam. He is still struggling with mitosis and meiosis. Will continue moving through the study guide next session."
