"The student took a full-length practice test on Friday and had it graded. She got a 29 on the English section, a 29 on the math, a 26 on the reading, and a 27 on the science. We are definitely going to spend this last week having her doing as many reading passages as possible with strict timing to try to shave that last minute off her time. We also looked over her science, which overall she did excellent. We looked over that section to see what strategies she can use if she comes across a science passage on the actual college entrance exam that she does not understand. Her English and math remain solid and she is going to continue doing practice work for both sections but our main focus will be on reading and science. I think with some hard work and focus she could have a good day next Saturday and score even better."
"The student told me at the beginning of our session that she had taken another Math practice test. I found that she had made some partial improvements to her approach on some questions: she sometimes drew a figure to help visualize the question on geometry, trigonometry, and word problems, and she wrote out more of her work. I found that she could still improve further upon these approaches, as she continued to have question comprehension errors. I stressed that she must ask herself before answering each question, "Am I answering the question being asked?" and to double-check by re-reading the question. I also noticed that on some questions, she would make a calculation mistake or use an incorrect technique, resulting in an answer that was not one of the answer choices. I told her that finding an answer that was not one of the options should cause her to double-check her work. I also spoke with her parents, who asked what else could be done to improve her math scores. I told them that a review of the fundamental math concepts that would be used on the test could be very helpful, as she needs a refresher on some of these concepts. I recommended either using resources such as books and websites to review this area. She has improved her subject scores by 4-5 points per subject."
"We reviewed all the areas the student needed work with as she prepares to take the ACT this upcoming Saturday."
