Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"The student and I worked on his math homework again, along with some reading and spelling homework that he had accumulated over the week that we did not meet. We read a story together and he answered questions about it, and we worked on a worksheet on bar graphs again. He is a great reader and has excellent comprehension, as well as an intuition for when to look back on a reading to check up on facts in the story in order to answer questions."
"In this session, the student and I went over how to solve problems containing a variable/number with negative exponents or exponents that are fractions. We went through his algebra two problem book to make a list of topics to review for his final based on those topics with which he informed me that he needed help. Some of these topics include negative exponents, fraction exponents, solving and evaluating quadratic equations, using the quadratic formula, and working with logs and ln x."
"Today the student had no homework to go over. But he knew that I was coming tonight so he asked his teacher if she could give him some advanced stuff so we could go over it together. The fact that he went out of his way to get more work made me smile. The things his teacher gave him were on fractions, and splitting up a whole thing into parts. Basically a pizza type problem. When we were finished with that, and since he knows some basics with fractions I decided to show him some basic probability problems. We went over the chances of flipping 2 heads in a row, 3 heads, etc. I showed him how to make a probability tree, but that might have gone over his head. It was still fun, and he was very interested the whole time."
"The session was great. The students picked the problem they wanted to work on and worked collaboratively, with some guidance from tutor."
"During today's session, the student was having a difficult time completing the work. We worked on division using pictures. The picture instructions were to count by the given number and circle that number. After circling, she had to write down how many groups she had and how many she had left over. We started with small groups then moved into a group of 50 which required that she circle the requested number and then write down how many were left over. For the next session, we will work on division."
"The student and I mainly reviewed her math homework as well as her upcoming state capitals test this session. She is definitely well ahead in her class work at this point. We will continue to review her times tables in preparation for next year's math material."
