Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
This week the student finally learned the next most important lesson for a young girl, clothes! She now could fake her way through a Spanish cafe with her knowledge of food and drink. Now she can finally describe a day out at the mall. We learned everything from socks, to dresses, to winter coats. Further we learned our colors. To begin the session, excitedly armed with new vocab and knowing how quickly the student has progressed, I modeled our sentences in Spanish. I would write a question in Spanish and request an answer in Spanish such as 'what color will be created if I add blue to yellow?', 'what are you wearing now?', 'what would you wear to a wedding? Skiing?'
Then we introduced 6 new stem changing verbs(e-ie), most important of which was querer-to want. I then used one of my favorite techniques. I simply asked the student what she wants. She responded, nothing. I wrote that. As we continued our conversation back and forth or as we were interrupted by passing family members or whatever might go on in a session. Whatever quips the student said, I wrote until I had about 10 English sentences. Then I asked her to translate all of her complex thoughts and simple sentences into Spanish. Sometimes new vocab can be learned and the student can get a real grasp on what everyday phrases sound like. It can be intimidating and quite fun as the student says things like 'oh I won't be saying things like this again'. It lets both of us approach more real world and complex structures, but in a lighthearted way. This also allows for a bit of relaxation during the session as we can briefly socialize, but it was actually all in the name of progress. Next week we will look at the seasons and describe, not just the weather, but also how to construct phrases like 'I am cold' or 'I am hot' as they are not directly translatable with the verbs 'to be' in Spanish."
