"The student and I worked on completing her essay about where and how she would spend her perfect vacation. The student did very well organizing her thoughts, but forgot to introduce the topics she would discuss in her introductory paragraph. We also completed a lesson on their, there, and they're because the student confused them throughout her essay. She was unfamiliar with the concept of an adverb, so we completed a lesson on the purpose of an adverb and how to locate adverbs in a sentence. By the end of our session, the student could successfully correct her essay and explain the use of their, they're, and there. In addition, we went over other possible prompts for the essay portion of the test and completed outlines in case she came across any of them. The student also stated that she now felt like she had more strategies to successfully complete the essay."
"We continued studying for the upcoming exam. We did a brief warm-up centered around mean, median, and mode. The student did exceptionally well. If his results today are any indication, he is in excellent shape for Thursday."
"The student and I worked through two sections of a practice test under timed conditions. The student struggled a bit with time management, and we talked about a few tricks for taking standardized tests and keeping pace. We worked from a book for lower level assessment exams, which are geared mostly towards grades 5 and 6. Naturally, the student struggled with some of the vocabulary words and math concepts and, once we identified which problems were simply about her grade level, she did well. I suggested that she look up and study the words she did not know, learn the synonyms for them, and review other available vocabulary lists. The student did well on the quantitative section, except for those geared more towards older grades."
