"I checked her short writing assignment. The student completed preliminary research for her essay and decided on a topic. I assigned Reading all the research material and writing her thesis as homework."
"In our first meeting, much of what the student and I worked on was getting to know one another. I was especially interested in how she works as a student: how she takes notes, approaches homework, stays organized, etc. She is adept at note-taking and was focused throughout our session. One of the things we talked about during our meeting was how the homework in her AP Gov class was long. So the first thing we worked on was trying to hone her reading and note-taking skills. The goal of this is to make it easier to do her assignments quickly. Her textbook is long and wordy. One good thing about it is that each paragraph begins with a sentence which summarizes the previous one. We talked about how she can use this to her advantage in completing her assignments more quickly. In the process of doing this, we also worked through a few of the more complicated concepts in the class (strict scrutiny and suspect classification). We also talked about her math class. It seems that this may be the source of the bulk of our work together. She told me that her teacher doesn't go over homework or tests after they are complete, so she doesn't know how to learn from her mistakes. We will go over these in our sessions together so that she can learn. I look forward to meeting with the student again soon."
"The student and I reviewed the entirety of Chapter 10 (Food and Agriculture) in preparation for his test on Friday. We focused especially on the "Key Terms." Since we're getting closer to the AP exam date, we also spent time outlining a potential FRQ (one on agriculture from a previous year's exam). The student did a good job, and he has additional time tomorrow to prepare for the exam. I think he'll do quite well."
