Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"This was our first session working together. We got acquainted a bit and then jumped right into preparing for the essay question. I shared my suggestion for a good essay format and demonstrated how I might fill in the outline for a sample essay prompt. We then outlined a second sample prompt together. We talked about the importance of making a quick outline before beginning to write and went over a few tips and tricks for the essay portion. Because the student feels that her vocabulary is weak, we spent the second half of our session working on sentence completion questions. We went over strategies for this type of question and will work on increasing her speed in the coming weeks. We finished by talking about the math portion of the test and getting a sense of where we should focus our attention during our session tomorrow."
"This was our last session before the student's test. She hadn't been feeling too confident with the estimating section, so we focused on that first. We practiced different short-cuts and made sure we were rounding to the correct places. I also drilled her on mental multiplication to make sure it was fresh in her head. After that, we worked our way through a few of every kind of question as a final review."
"We covered SAT strategy, structure, and scoring and then we covered both Sentence Completion as well as all the Algebra subtopics and the student did quite well with both subjects. I asked him to do 4 pages of sentence completion problems as well as to finish up the Algebra packet and do one of the Algebra practice quizzes for next time."
"The student and I had a great first session. We worked on the math section portion of the exam. It's clear he has a thorough base understanding of the concepts he'll be tested on."
"Today, we continued to review homework, focusing on math, as he stands to gain a lot from review of content and discussion of strategy. We've really been stressing geometry."
"Today we continued to work on some math concepts that the student is working on: ratios, percents, fractions, and the Pythagorean theorem. I can definitely see improvement from when we first started sessions. She doesn't need to rely on the calculator quite as much, and she has definitely grasped the concept of the Pythagorean Theorem and is getting better with percent problems. The plan is to continue working through the different math concepts on the SAT one by one, and having her do LOTS of drills at home."
"We covered reading comprehension, some writing, and math portions of the SAT. There were no major concerns from this session."
"In this session, the student and I began by completing some particularly difficult math problems. She did an excellent job on them. Next we worked on problems involving identifying sentence errors and improving paragraphs. She did very well with these too."
"The student and I had our first meeting, and we went over math concepts and did a practice math section. Then we did a critical reading section and discussed reading strategies to employ and practice in the future."
"I met with the students for a session of SAT tutoring. We went over all three sections of the test. Both students were nearly perfect on math and grammar and very strong in reading. The first student also submitted an excellent essay to me that showed improvement. As we move closer to the test date, we will be doing more practice tests to help both students prepare."
"The pupil and I talked about the SAT essay. We developed a standard outline that will satisfy most essay prompts. We also went through math questions, working on recalling concepts he's learned in school. We developed our own reading comprehension questions based on news articles. This allowed him to think about the kinds of questions asked and what information is important in the reading passages."
"The student has shown improvement solving math problems, but I will continue to focus on improving her comprehension of questions. We proceeded to work on a writing section, and she is doing fairly well with this topic. She said she is reading "Elements of Style" and writing sentences with SAT vocab to further prepare for the test."
